Re: Will the RP1 on the Pi5 allow a different cpu be used
Raspberry Pi Ltd, not Raspberry Pi Foundation. Amazing how many people still think the Foundation make the Pi devices, despite them not doing so for 10 years.

Re: Wireless Vibrating Motors
The Pico is the smallest board we make.
SEEED studios do a tiny RP2040 based board, but that doesn't have wireless I don't think.

Re: Raspberry Pi 5 discussion thread
Will the HDMI ports be able to support hdcp? why would you want to use HDCP? A corporation buying up all the Pi computers and turning them into movie players might want to encrypt the video output so people wouldn't steal the little mermaid. As implausible as it sounds, that's the dog developer's f...

Re: Pi5 availability (Aka, Yet Another Pi5 Thread)
I am sure they will soon be available on Amazon and via other scalpers, as before when Zero 2 was launch the stock disappeared over night (I know there was a component shortage etc and covid in there) but we are still not really having plentiful supplies, I need 3 Pi Zero 2's, I have bought my &quo...

Re: RPi5: Can we expect improvements in power consumption in future kernels?
This is a brand new product that hasn't hit the shelves yet. The team have been working very hard to get it out of the door and working well. There are likely inefficiencies in the code paths, which will be fixed over time. As for the final result? Who knows! As someone once said, premature optimisa...

Re: Raspberry Pi 5 discussion thread
James Do you have any experience of using VS Code or even the Arduino IDE on the Pi5 compared to a Pi4 with 8GB? (My 4 is overclocked to 2.2GHz but is still painfully slow especially for Arduino 1.8.x) Cheers. Not used Arduino on Pi4, have used VSCode and apart from some code completion slowdowns w...

Re: RPi5 RTC Specs?
To be honest, I used a Pi4 power supply for all my testing (as did many others - the PSs only turned up in volume a couple of weeks ago). Never had a problem. Its only when you add extra USB stuff over and above the normal stuff when it will start to struggle. I've seen lots of comments from people ...

What files did it put in users/Documents? That's really odd behaviour and not something I would expect.
When I tested the installer everything installed sensibly, and it just worked out of the box.

Re: RPi5 RTC Specs?
My phrasing "custom" of earlier is not quite correct. Better is to say that the 5V5A is an option in the PD specification, that often is not implemented. But the PS is definitely PD compliant.

Re: rPi Cooling (SD and CPU)
Thanks, Jamesh. On your suggestion I read that PDF from cover to cover. It has highlighted alternatives to SD (flash) cards such as network booting and possible cloud options, so those will now feature in my thinking. On the frailties of SD cards, it suggests reducing the load on SD cards by increa...

Re: Will the RP1 on the Pi5 allow a different cpu be used
That would certainly be possible, but AFAIK, there are no RISCV implementations with the same performance levels as the A76, never mind any of the newer ARM designs.

Re: New raspberry pi os 12 coming out based on wayland... What about vnc server?
RealVNC is pretty important to me. I would describe myself as very much old-school CLI man but I have 20 Pi's at home and 50 at work and it is very handy using a single client to see the GUI on what are multiple different models running several OS versions. And with each new Pi being more capable o...

Re: Can Raspberry Pi 4B be infected with Malware in a supply chain attack
The bootcode needs to be signed, so cannot be rewritten by "just anyone", it would need to be someone with access to the signing key. That's ONLY Pi people. And only a subset of Pi people. The key is securely stored.

Re: New raspberry pi os 12 coming out based on wayland... What about vnc server?
Does the new Pi 5 require Wayland? Don't think it is "requires", my impression is Wayland/Wayfire is just twice as fast as old X11. it just comes with wayland as most people think that animated windows and stuff 'are essential' Nah, just an old dream becoming real ;) Like Vulkan is faster...

Re: rPi Cooling (SD and CPU)
Thank you for the link. It makes interesting reading. But, disconcertingly, it underlines the point that the life expectancy of SD cards is shockingly short. In my case, this appears to be 6 months. They're not expensive to replace, but the prospect of data loss and repeating the installation proce...

Just some anecdotal stuff from someone who actually has a Pi 5. I've used it as a desktop machine, and out of the box running from an SD card, with the active cooler, on a 4k monitor. It's great. Easily a desktop replacement for a vast swathe of use cases. The desktop is fast, browsing is surprisin...

Re: RPi5 RTC Specs?
I wonder if a 12 battery could be connected directly to the USB-C if PD was setup right. 12V LiFePO or Lead Gel cell faking as 15V input. AIUI, no. The Pi5 only accepts 5V, initially expecting the USB-C "standard" 3A, but requesting a switch to 5V 5A. There is no circuitry to accept highe...
