Re: Raspberry Pi 4 temperature

Sat Jul 06, 2019 1:29 am

After having some trouble with the vl805_fw_0137a8 frimware, I came back to vl805_fw_013701.

Now after being a little in charge, the minimal CPU temperature in idle mode is 81 ° C :(

By adding the line "arm_freq_min=400" I'm opting 73/74 ° C in idle mode and 83/85° C on youtube @ 1080p.

From what I read consumer reviews of a major seller on the internet it would seem that the case "Flirc Raspberry Pi" allows to gain around 19 ° C, a return to acceptable values. I will not fail to give you a short review of it when I receive it if it interests some of you.
RPi 4 with 4 Gb of RAM @ arm_freq=2000 / over_voltage=5 / gpu_mem=192 + FLIRC case for Raspberry Pi 4 (CPU @ 69 ° C max) + Beta frimware (pieeprom-2020-06-03.bin) for USB3 SSD booting + SSD Samsung 850 Pro 1To + Raspian OS 64 Bits Beta

By the way, if you run "sudo ./vl805" with no parameters it displays the version of the currently running firmware. Note that this may differ from what's in the EEPROM if you've just reprogrammed it but not rebooted.

Glad I brought a HardKernel N2 now. More money granted, but works with no problems.
My Pi4 works with no problems.

I have an Odroid-N2 which should be faster for various reasons, but in practice the Pi4 is faster. Compiling a large program on the Pi4 is quicker than on the N2 for example. Same compiler, same program.
Logging in over ssh or copying files around is much faster on the Pi4.

I use the N2 for writing Aarch 64 assembler which is much nicer than the legacy 32-bit ARM ISA on the Pi.
Thanks for the comparison, very interesting. Will definitely be keeping an eye on the Pi4's progress.

ARM is another story: no improvements to ISA, no more general purpose registers, no legacy compatibility to get rid of;
What ??? Sorry, that is nonsense.

1) A64 is a completely different ISA to A32. It is greatly improved and streamlined for modern CPU's.
2) The number of registers has doubled.
And the number of floating-point/SIMD registers has doubled too (now 32).
3) Its completely incompatible with the old 32-bit ISA

Take some time to study Aarch64.
Sorry I would have been more precise.
Of course the machine code is completely different between A64 and A32, I would not expected anything else. When I said ISA I would mean that, apart from the integer division instructions, the basic ALU instructions are quite the same, so there are not many more hardware paths for other common operations, although there are some useful new instructions.
About the number of registers that doubled, my mistake.

Yes, this firmware is installed on the board, unlike previous Pi models.

Oh dearie-me!! I installed vl805_update_0137a8 this morning and it all broke!!

Much of it my fault I guess but, f.y.i., I was going off-piste booting from SD => /root partition on USB3 SSD (240GB) having sort-of followed this article c/o Znet:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/raspberry ... sktop-kit/

It was all working super smoothly, booting from cold start to 35 page LibreOffice document in c. 55 seconds. This was a perfectly usable desktop PC for my purposes (with 240GB to play with). Stable for several days 24/7, handling updates etc - all good.

After installing vl805_fw_0137a8 -> reboot -> Nothing! -> went to make toast and coffee --> something stirring.... [ 4m 55s later] ... -> Desktop!
Nothing working except at absolutely glacial speeds. <glum face>
Close down [ c.1 minute]. Note, I rebooted a couple of times to check it wasn't just the initial setup taking a long time. Each time c. 5 min to boot.
[enjoying a long breakfast]
Swapped to standard SD with no SSD and all seemed about right and a bit cooler on vl805_fw_0137a8.

Reverted to vl805_fw_013701 and SSD booting nicely again </glum face> and using it to write this.

I hope my feedback helps a bit and I look forward to maybe a cooler boot from MSD when to boot team finish their code.

All much appreciated. Thank you.

I've been looking at different cases with fans and/or heatsinks and quite like the look of this GeeekPi case:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/GeeekPi-Transp ... B06XT1JKLQ

I'd considered getting the Fan SHIM and a case like the Pibow Coupé 4, but the GeeekPi case looks at have the advantage that it has a guard to prevent accidentally touching the fan (although the Fan SHIM has the advantage of being able to turn the fan on or off, which I don't think this would support). What do you think?

I went with the Pibow Coupe Ninja for my Pi 4. I have those cases on my 3B+ and 3A+'s and like them. I also ordered the heatsink made to fit that case. Fan Shim was out of stock or I would have ordered one to try out. I don't have any of it in my hands yet to play with though. It should arrive some time early next week.
My plan is to run the 4B with just 4 standoffs in the corners for feet, no case no heatsink, for a base mark of the temp. Stock Buster install with no special tweaks. Then put the case on with no heatsink. Then heatsink with no case. Then both on. I will be getting a fan shim in the next little while and will see what that does when I get my hands on one. I'm not taking the heatsink back off though. I'll just blow air onto it.
I'll post back what I find out here.

I installed a small heatsink just on the CPU, the temperature dropped dramatically, though only briefly as soon the heatsink rose to the same temperature as the CPU. This is a Pi 4 installed in a modified Pi 3 case with the topmost cover and the side panel with the micro-HDMI connectors removed. Running idle, sitting at a desktop, with original firmware and clock speeds, with 4k disabled.

My Fan Shim and Coupe case arrived this morning, so I'm about to experiment with those next.

Bare in mind, I have a small heatsink that just about covers the CPU:
temp=58.0'C
Not running the new firmware. this is with multiple stuff in the background, hexchat open and Firefox.
Not bad but could be better if, y'know; new firmware!

EDIT: Still going so thought I'd give another update:
temp=59.0'C
This is with Firefox-ESR open and hexchat. I have multiple things open in the background too.

I spent some time today look at what Raspberry Pi 4 owners can do to keep the Pi 4 cool, especially if you want to use an enclosure.

I was looking to fit an old an old Cooler master (one of the originals of that style, has a shroud to push air over the power chips bird).

It's a bit thing, the only way to get it in is an old very peltier I have sandwich in between (Back from AMD K6 overlooking days).
Also the great big copper heatpipes get a bit close to the old GPIO pins.

That heatsink above would be better reorientated so the air blows down after the exit and through the USB ports, or the PMIC, not over the GPIO pins.

I already have a Flirc on order, but that ICE Tower cooler does look bonkers.

There are youtube videos of people water cooling Pi computers, which is silly but still kind of cool. Didn't help much because Pi computers are sub-10W devices, they just don't generate much heat, so over the top cooling solutions are mostly for show (off). ;)

It would be funny to show up at a Pi event with one of those riding high on your Pi. :shock:

I followed the instructions to update the firmware, but my Pi doesn't want to start. Nothing on screen (either hdmi).
The green led flashes 7 times then goes off for a second. I'm not sure what to do now.

Concern trolling... ouch. Touched a nerve I think.

The response was unfortunate, and embarrassing.

I'd like to believe the RPi Foundation wouldn't be endorsing that riposte.

Many more people are asking the same question(s) all over the Internet.

HI all,
FIrstly, let me apologise - I'm a complete Pi novice. I'm experiencing the overheating problem as well, meaning that I can't even watch embedded videos (let alone full screen) online using Chromium, without the thermometer icon flashing up after a few minutes. I've tried to follow the instructions above to install the new firmware build, but when I try to run the command lines detailed above, after having downloaded and unzipped the zip, I get the following message in the terminal:

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Wes. I can share my experiences in an attempt to assist you.

Forget the new firmware fix, for now. RPi engineers still have some work to do in order to achieve their goals. I have not installed the new VLI firmware fix and I don't intend to because it would seem that this 'fix' is still a "work in progress".

In order to successfully cool down your RPi4 so that overheating will never be a problem, you need an active cooling solution. Or, at least, a rather large heatsink - like this one: https://www.cnx-software.com/2019/06/27 ... k-edition/

I have attached a 28mm x 28mm x 20mm heatsink to the RPi4 SoC by using a 14mm x 14mm double-sided 3M thermal pad. This only lowered the SoC operating temperature by ~5'C. So, I fixed a 25mm x 25mm x 7mm fan to the top of the heatsink as well. This lowered the SoC operating temperature by +20'C. Temparatures are now at acceptable levels. This is how i run my RPi4.

When hammering all the [4x] CPU cores for long periods on the RPi4, by compiling binaries from source code on a 'gcc make -j6', the temperatures are very agreeable as a result. Below is a screenshot of the CPU status [with the above fan and heatsink attached to the SoC for additional cooling] under a heavy workload:

Image

[EDIT] forgot to mention... i have discovered that my RPi4 runs approx. 20% faster as a result of cooling it down as per the above!

FWIW, my Pi4 is sitting vertically and open-air, propped up by the box it came in, forlornly awaiting a case, with no firmware updates applied. Testing done with a freshly-made Buster Lite image with VNC, an xterm, etc installed onto it.

With WiFi on and connected, the temperature over a 20-minute period ranged from 55-62, with the bulk of the once-per-second samplings at 59-60. With WiFi off (and disabled via blacklist brcmfmac/brcmutil), the temperature over the same 20-minute period ranged from 55-59, with the bulk of the samples at 57-58.

My partially scientific conclusion is that WiFi on and connected is worth 1-2 degrees of increased temperature. YMMV

I recently purchased the exact same model of case that you mention. I returned it the next day because it was understandably quite cheaply put together and unfortunately arrived with two of the components damaged. I've order a radiator/enclosure combo off of a popular online auction site instead. Good luck with your cooling endeavours!
