NESPi

Wed Jan 30, 2013 2:08 pm

Hi everyone,

First of: Sorry for my english, it's not my native language ;)
Second: I'm still searching for a good name, feel free to submit some ;)

Lets get started

I got hold of an old (broken ;)) NES and converted it into a Multi RetroGaming Station:

I took everything out of it and replaced it with a Raspberry Pi and some other stuff:

I know its a total mess, but it was the first time for me Building something like this ;)
On the right side (the top half of the NES) you see an 7 Port Powered USB-Hub and a 250GB HDD.
On the left side you see a big mess of cables, and somewhere below them the RPi. so here are some details whats this all about:

In the Front I have added four USB Ports for USB Gamepads or Controllers like the "Competition pro". Furthermore there are two SNES Controller Ports and the two standart NES Ports.

To Connect the NES Ports to the Pi I used one of Petrockblogs SNESDev-RPi Boards BIG Thanks to him!
The SNES Ports are Connected Through a Linux compatible SNES-to-USB adapter.
I made a little Board to solder the USB Ports and the Cables onto it and to give it a little bit of stability. I glued it to the bottom of the case to hold it in place and covered the Board with "some" hot glue, so I don't accidently ripp of some of the cables

In the Back and on the side of the NES I replaced the Connections with some selfmade Panels so I could fit in the Connection used for the Pi:

(There is a spare USB slot)

The whole thing is powered by an 3A/5V Power supply. Both the Pi and the Hub are directly connected to it.

Thats it for the Hardwarepart.
The only thing I haven't done yet is connecting the Reset Button to the GPIO-Pins to used for exiting games and to connect the front LED.

For Pictures of the building process go here

On the Softwareside I use the RetroArch Frontend via the RetroPie-Setup, once again BIG thanks to Petrockblog and all the others working on it!
I haven't fully configured yet, but this shouldn't be that hard to do (I only have to work my self into Linux first ;-))

Thats it for now.

I you have any questions, suggestions, names (maybe something with NES/Pi/Ninteno/.... in it?) or what everelse you want to know feel free to post it!

Sorry that I didn't answer yet, but at the moment I'm in the Middle of my exams and have about no time for anything besides that.
As soon as I'm throught with my exams I will post some more Info on how to build the Console.

Did you take a look at the "Building Process" gallarie? I think some of the pics show pretty well what I did.

I think I paid about 170€ for everything:

Raspberry Pi: ~40€
broken NES: 5-15€
External HDD: ~70€
USB HUB: 20€
Smallparts and Cables: ~20-30€

If you need anymore information, feel free to ask.
