Curious to know what the hardware Revision Code for an 8gb RPi4 will be, since the documentation specifies a 3-bit field for Memory Size -
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /README.md

Which has reminded me I need to update that page!

Is this a name change only, and existing Raspbian buster installations will update to "Raspberry PI OS"?

Great, this will finally stop the confusion on the ARM vs x86 OS naming !!

Raspbian.org has still says
www.raspian.org wrote: Raspbian is a community funded and supported free software effort.

Note: Raspbian is not affiliated with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Raspbian was created by a small, dedicated team of developers that are fans of the Raspberry Pi hardware, the educational goals of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and, of course, the Debian Project.
So I guess it's now been formally taken over ?

Can we get an official abbreviation ASAP please? :)

RPiOS ?

RPIOS ?

RPOS ?

[edit]

And of course all the variants

RPiOS64 ? etc

and which will be the default - the 32bit or the 64 bit?

THE BIG QUESTIONS :)

I did ask Da Management, but no suggestions were forthcoming. 'raspios' is what we are using for download image naming. I'm going with PIOS!

Default is 32bit. 64 is still very much a beta.

raspberrypi-kernel-headers only raspberrypi-kernel-headers:armhf.

Where do you post and whoop thanks for Raspbian64.
PS obviously rapios pronounced rapeyos
But really raspios via the download name.
So guess ra-spi-os depending on how posh you are.

To answer my own question raspbian vs RPiOS above, I found this from Eben in the blog comments:
Eben wrote:[Raspberry Pi OS is ] just an overdue naming change to discriminate between Raspbian (the independent open source project) and the 32-bit images that Raspberry Pi builds on top of it.

I doubt it. And I predict it will only prompt more pedantic postings which quote an OP's post in full merely to add "It's not called Raspbian".

I expect a great deal of confusion with Raspbian still existing separate to Raspberry Pi OS, there are lots of forum posts and articles which refer to Raspbian.

And I would expect to see even greater confusion should someone ask; what's the best Raspberry Pi OS to use ?

Will that be a question of Lite, Desktop or Desktop with Recommended Software, or are they asking about a Raspberry Pi OS as an alternative to Raspberry Pi OS; Ubuntu, Win 10 IOT, RISC-OS, etc ?

But it's a done deal now.

Yes even more confusion as it will be both ARMHF & ARM64, so even more people seeing software for 64bit software will be confused between ARM & x86.

Then eventually we will have a x86-64 Debian Release.

Yep just an ongoing mess of confusion, maybe we should ask all posters to ??

Code: Select all

cat /etc/os-release

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cpuinfo

As the default information to be included ??

Maybe. Fortunately for me I'm already running Raspberry Pi OS and, for once, I am ahead of the curve with a 64-bit kernel.

Same here and ran into my first problem with custom drivers as the kernel headers are just for armhf still.

raspberrypi-kernel-headers only raspberrypi-kernel-headers:armhf

Did post earlier and also wondering is there going to be a seperate forum space or just in advanced?

OK, so rather than adad new forum sections specifically for RASPIOS64, since its should be functionally identical to the 32bit version, we are going to suggest if you find problems with it, to use our github issues repo to report them, rather than on here (which gets more engineer eyeballs anyway)

https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues

I'd suggest adding [raspios64] to the title of any bug report.

is this ready for "primetime" or still needs a few more feedback/tweak recommendations from volunteer testers?

As cofounder of raspbian I would like to clarify the situation. There is no takeover here just some clearing up of terminology.

The raspbian project still exists and will continue to exist to provide an armv6 hardfloat rebuild of Debian. We are not controlled by the raspberry pi foundation/trading, though they do support us by providing some hosting services and paying for some of my time.

On top of this base various parties including but not limited to the raspberry pi foundation/trading built customized images. In practice the majority of raspbian users used the raspberry pi foundation's raspbian images and their images were often just reffered to as "raspbian". Over the years the delta between "plain raspbian" and "raspberry pi foundation raspbian images" has grown.

For a while now raspberry pi have been considering 64-bit images, Eben sent me an email asking my opinion about nomanclature and I expressed that I would not be pleased about the use of the name "Raspbian" for images that did not contain anything from Raspbian. Using the term "Debian" would also be problematic as Debian are also building their own images for the Raspberry pi.

So Raspberry pi have decided to use the term "Raspberry pi OS" for their operating system images going forward. Roughly speaking that leaves us with the following.

"raspberry pi 32-bit OS" = raspbian base userland + raspberry pi kernels (32-bit and 64-bit) + raspberry pi UI and graphics stack enhancements + raspberry pi additional software

"raspberry pi 64-bit OS" = debian arm64 base userland + raspberry pi 64-bit kernel + raspberry pi UI and graphics stack enhancements + raspberry pi additional software
