Debian Bullseye Officially released yesterday 8-14-2021

Sun Aug 15, 2021 7:32 am

I noticed that my raspbian pi OS arm 64 bit distribution based on debian buster changed the packages from stable to old-stable,

I am wondering if it is already possible to totally switch to bullseye and if "Yes" what specific command to run or will it still take a few days of waiting?

I'm happy to have openssh 8.4 so that I can use fido2 credentials to authenticate myself in remote logins and use yubico-pam packages

I have read but I do not find traces on a possible release date for raspian Pi OS, not even a possible roadmap, nor if it is already possible now from terminal for arm64 version to get bullseye from buster.

Fair enough but is there any indication on how much work there remains to be done? I am mainly asking if there is any chance the release would happen by the end of August 2021 or if that is out of the question. (I understand you do nto want to promise a date but ruling out a date should be easier).

Here's a completely uninformed comment from a fellow forum reader and volunteer helper...

The upstream Debian release was made yesterday, Saturday 14th August 2021.

The software engineers employed by Raspberry Pi Trading are probably not paid to work at weekends.

So they won't officially know what is in the final release until after they start work on Monday 16th August, and until they know that they won't know "how much work there remains to be done."

I really wouldn't expect any informed constructive comment for at least 24 hours from now... And maybe not even then, given the policy already succinctly outlined above.

We also have August Bank Holiday as well as school's out so may not have full compliment of staff.

So as per the past decade (except on a couple of occasions) there is unlikely to be any indication

First, apologies for the treatment you are getting here.

Based on history, you should be prepared for a wait of 3 months or longer before Raspbian makes the switch.

Yeah, I get that. The old Hewlett Packard had the same policy, we don't announce till ready to ship. As they grew it began to hurt them.

My recollection is the version of Raspberry Pi OS based on Buster was released a week before Debian Buster was official

My personal preference is for the current version of Raspberry Pi OS to continue to be supported until June 2024 or for as long as Buster is supported by Debian.

Raspberry Pi (Raspbian Buster) OS was released early to specifically coincide with the launch of the 4B:.

I'm probably remembering the Stretch release.

Raspbian Buster was released to coincided with the launch of the 4B, the 4B was released earlier than expected so it was always not going to support earlier releases:

The Jessie release came 6 months after Debian. Stretch was 2 months.
