New "Can't update Chromium" message?

I have never gotten this notification inside chromium before.

I checked apt and chromium-browser does not have an upgrade available. What do you guys thing, should I push the button and see what happens?

Same here - just started today using 2020-02-05-raspbian-buster.img.

I got the same message today, so I did the update/upgrade thing, and now the message has gone.

I now have Chromium showing:

"Version 78.0.3904.108 (Official Build) Built on Raspbian , running on Raspbian 10 (32-bit)"

Same here. Strangely, chromium-browser was not listed to be upgraded and the upgrade ended up bricking my system after a reboot.

And then at exactly 11:00 am CT, the "Can't update Chromium" popped up again! I clicked the button, and it brought me to the Chrome download page.

You can ignore the "Chromium is out of date" message. That builtin update feature of the Chromium browser is not tied to RPF/RPT APT repo updates. It does not reflect or detect which version of Chromium is available from RPF/RPT APT repositories. So even though there may be more recent versions of Chromium browser available in general, that doesn't mean that a newer version is available for your Pi. A newer version of Chromium for the RPF/RPT's Raspbian will be available when the RPF/RPT makes it available. I hope that makes sense.

Not very interesting to me... A pretty large Chromium stable release (not specific to Pi's, but Chromium in general) was just made available during this past week.

Many times Raspbian's Chromium is an older version than Debian's. At one point we had v65 while Debian's was v72. Any idea why this notification has never been seen before?

You can try launching Chromium browser with --check-for-update-interval=0. I don't know if it will work or not. I'm comfortable simply ignoring the notification. Good luck.

Zero doesn't work, but 604800 (7 days) SEEMS to so far: --check-for-update-interval=604800

I too keep getting the same thing. Just need to wait for an update of Chromium which I hope will support Netflix again.

Netflix and similar DRM services have never been "officially" supported, if it works it is a bonus

Pretty strange people like us don't care for messages like this.. And some people aren't realising chromium is highly used for kiosk mode.

Dropping a reply here is someone has a proper solution. What I tried is deïnstalled chromium with

sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq chromium-browser
sudo apt-get -f install

And then install chromium again with

sudo apt install chromium-browser

This worked for one Pi (or looks like its working), and is not working for two others.

I'm trying update/upgrade again.

I'm having the same issue - and i'm also using my Raspberry Pi with Chromium in kiosk mode - so "ignoring the message" isn't really a helpful answer to this problem.

Could anyone figure out which server is used by Chromium for the update check?
So i could block the request via hosts-file.

It's not a real update check. It's just determining the "build date" by checking when the last source file was modified, which ends up hard coded not the binary. Then it starts nagging if it's greater than 12 weeks.

Browsing through the chromium command line switches paid off. I found one that disables the popup from, well, popping up!

Here's the command to run:

chromium-browser --check-for-update-interval=1 --simulate-critical-update

--check-for-update-interval=1 makes chromium check one second after starting. This way, you can see right away if the flag worked or not instead of waiting several hours.

While chromium still thinks there is an update, the popup does not appear by itself. It's just an icon:
