What Raspberry Pi do I have?

About a year and a half ago I purchased 2 Raspberry Pis/XBMC for use un my home. The performance is deteriorating and I would like to upgrade to KODI. I'm fair computer user but that's all and my tech support has left town. I've found online that you you can purchase pre-recorded sd cards that claim to be plug and play. If true that should easily solve my performance and upgrade problems. My problem is that besides being 1 1/2 years old I don't know what model I have. One of the vendors I'm looking at says he has cards for Models B+, B, A+,A and 2B. You have a sticky " Pictorial Buying Guide for A, B and B+" that should help me identify my Pi. You show Models B+,B and A+ but mine appears to be one of the "older A or B models". One giveaway seems to be that I have connectors on all 4 sides whereas the "newer" ones seem to use only 3 sides.

Can someone help me identify my PI and perhaps tell me if any of these cards can be used in my Pi's.

I think the command:

is supposed to tell the story.

There is a table somewhere that tells what each possible number means (i.e., to which model of Pi it corresponds). I have no idea where that table is stored (presumably somewhere under www.raspberrypi.org).

These are the values I've personally seen:

000f - Model B with 512M
0010 - Model B+ with 512M
a21041 - Model B2 with 1G

A card with a recent version of Raspbian or NOOBS will work on any version of RPi that the card (possibly with the aid of a micro-SD to SD adaptor) can be fitted into.

If it's 18 months old and has an ethernet port, then it's almost certainly a B.

Just because 'something' can be done, doesn't mean it should be.

For one thing...the full sized SD card used in the original Model B (and the A, for that matter) stick out quite a bit. People have damaged the card holder by dropping the board with the card in place. If you use a micro-SD card adapter, you don't run that risk. Alternatively...most micro-SD cards come with a full sized adapter and that way you can use the same micro-SD card in either a Model B or a B+ or Pi2B.

So...there are some good reasons to use adapters.

Based on the pictures I don't have an A, A+, B+ or a Pi 2B os I must have a B. The "Hardware history supports that (I purchased in the 1st quarter of 2014).

For my purpose does the revision level make any difference?

Yes.
Usually just called a B.

The question now is what revision of B. There were a few important changes between the Rev 1 and later B models. Mostly the early ones had 256MB of RAM and USB current limiting fuses. The next models bypassed or got rid of those fuses. Then you got 512MB of RAM, and then the additional 8 pin GPIO connector holes.

On my Pi3B that returns:
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2

On my new 3B+ it returns:
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus Rev 1.3

Less typing and eliminates the need for the echo. I've gotten in the habit of using "pr -Fn" as my general file dumper. Much better than cat.
