Re: Dynamode USB Wifi Dongle issues

Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:32 pm

Hi.
So I mastered the drivers - everything works (I used compiled - by sepplmaster » Mon Feb 10, 2014 8:28 pm ).
Great, Thanks.

But I have a new problem :!: :roll:
When I set wifi trough "sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces" and reboot or insert wifi dongle to usb my Pi frozen.
I tried several guides.
And tried dongle in windows - works normaly.
Uf...

I have tried:

http://www.suntimebox.com/raspberry-pi- ... ork-setup/

Re: Dynamode USB Wifi Dongle issues

Is anyone able to outline how I would create the drivers for an aufs system? It is created with Berryboot.

uname -a gives:

Code: Select all

Linux raspberrypi 3.6.11-rpi-aufs #1 PREEMPT Sat Sep 7 23:10:27 CEST 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux
I followed most of the instructions in this thread without realising I have aufs.

First error I got was with wget http://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/ ... le.symvers
Came back with a TLS warning alert, unable to establish SSL connection. Tried 4 or 5 times but same error each time.

I pressed on without the Module.symvers but at 'make all' it comes up with:

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:~/src/DPA_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.3_20130717_LS# make all
make -C UTIL/ osutil
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/src/DPA_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.3_20130717_LS/UTIL'
cp -f os/linux/Makefile.6.util /root/src/DPA_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.3_20130717_LS/UTIL/os/linux/Makefile
make -C /lib/modules/3.6.11-rpi-aufs/build SUBDIRS=/root/src/DPA_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.3_20130717_LS/UTIL/os/linux modules
make[2]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/3.6.11-rpi-aufs/build'
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/lib/modules/3.6.11-rpi-aufs/build'
make[1]: *** [osutil] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/src/DPA_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.3_20130717_LS/UTIL'
make: *** [all] Error 2
Any idea what I need to do to get the drivers working?

The Module.symvers is one of the most important files in the process, it contains information about the modules used in this particular kernel. Therefore it is very important (and tricky) to get the right version of the Module.symvers for your kernel. I have no idea where you can get the one for you, but it has to match your exact kernel.

Concerning the ssl mistake in wget, that is an easy fix, and a quick internet search should have brought you the solution right away:

Code: Select all

wget --no-check-certificate URL
I do not know what causes the problem, so this is just a quick and dirty fix, I guess you loose your advantages of ssl here.

EDIT: You might find your Module.symvers here http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 66&t=41027

Thanks for the pointers. --no-check-certificate doesn't currently work, possibly as a Heartbleed OpenSSL precaution. Tried the link for compiling modules with 3.6.11-rpi-aufs but not really enough details for a novice like me to follow.

Apologies sepplmaster --no-check-certificate does work. I had missed sudo bash or sudo from the command.

Moved to Raspbian rather than try to sort out the Berryboot kernel.

After a couple of days I now have the drivers for the latest Raspbian kernel (3.10.37+). All looks ok but it does state kernel is tainted because the module license for mt7601usta is unspecified. I forgot to reduce the syslog output before compiling the drivers and the other option of iwpriv ra0 set Debug=0 currently gives:

Interface doesn't accept private ioctl...
set (8BE2): Operation not permitted

Interface ra0 now appears with ifconfig -a as:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr b8:27:eb:31:16:01

Now trying to set up ra0 but the Pi fails to boot if I add the following to my EXISTING /etc/network/interfaces:

auto ra0
allow-hotplug ra0
iface ra0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid "NETWORK SSID"
wpa-psk "NETWORK PASSWORD"

I will try with a fresh /etc/network/interfaces file but in the meantime does anyone know how to get ra0 up an running?

If the drivers seem to work ok I can make them available if anyone wants them (3.10.37+)

Pi still fails to boot with /etc/network/interfaces simply as:

auto ra0
allow-hotplug ra0
iface ra0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid "NETWORK SSID"
wpa-psk "NETWORK PASSWORD"

I will try renaming the ra0 to wlan0 in udev rules to see if this helps.

iwconfig gives:

ra0 Ralink STA ESSID:"11n-AP" Nickname:"MT7601STA"
Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

This is promising but even when I add Wicd I can't find any way of associating ra0 with my access point. Wicd fails to open.
Any ideas how to finally get this WiFi adapter running?

Wicd is now running but it states there are no wireless networks i.e. it is failing to recognise ra0.

Hi.
After several attempts I managed to run wifi without freezing Pi. I noticed I do not have any ESSID and Mac.
Why? :shock:

Thanks for the guide. I got my MT7601 wifi adapter working (not Dynamode).

1. Downloaded v3.0.0.4 driver from Mediatek
2. Compiled and installed driver (I had errors during compilation but was able to sort it out.)
3. ra0 appeared in ifconfig, updated /etc/network/interfaces to include ra0 (copied format of wlan0)
4. Installed wicd-curses, updated Preference to use ra0 as wireless network.
5. Wifi signals were detected. Selected desired wifi AP. Input settings for the AP.
6. Connect!

Well, this is just a summary.

Are you able to provide the working compiled drivers and which distribution version (3.10.24+, 3.10.25+, 3.10.36+, 3.10.37+) the drivers relate to?

Hi all.
I am still trying compile my own drivers. But when I reaches the point "make mrproper" problems begin.
Does anyone know why? Thanks.

After 2 days compiling a lot of things for several rpi versions, I have found the solution. The sources for mt7601 v3.0.0.3 has a bug (at least for me it generated Kernel Panic). I downloaded and compiled sources mt7601 v3.0.0.4 from MediaTek http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads/mt7601u-usb/. It works fine!

I have uploaded binaries compiled for version 3.10.37+. I have uploaded the full folder compiled here.
https://mega.co.nz/#!lggVkbCZ!oOJiEjDA_ ... 0GT_LZY1Ck
Installation:

Code: Select all

$ tar -vxzf mt7601u_3.0.0.4.tar.gz
$ sudo make install
$ sudo insmod /lib/modules/3.10.37+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/mt7601Usta.ko
$ sudo reboot
The kernel version must be 3.10.27+ #667. If you don't have it, you can upgrade/downgrade executing the commands:

Code: Select all

$ sudo rpi-update bb7abd7d34e758fc97546620128bf67a45016a5f
$ sudo reboot
And then install drivers.

I have tested it using wpa_supplicant

It worked for me. I hope it could help someone.
Good luck!

P.D: I have used it with TPLink TL-WN727N v4.0

Thanks for this. I am working through it now. Can you change your reference to 3.10.27 to 3.10.37. I spent 30 minutes 'downgrading' my 3.10.37 to '3.10.27' only to find the hash is for 3.10.37 :-)

You are a star scarrascoh.
After a week of trying, upgrading. downgrading and as many kernel panics as you can shake a stick at I have just made my first WEP connection with this WiFi dongle.

I used Wicd and it failed with WPA but I will now review my interfaces file etc and drop Wicd.

I managed to get it running with RaspBMC after 3 or 4 days but I had given up hope of using it with Raspbian. I was prepared to downgrade 10 versions from 3.10.37 to 3.10.27 to give it a go, only to find it is actually for 3.10.37.

Once again, thanks.

It is not accepting my interfaces and wpa_supplicant. Can you share yours and did you manually edit RT2870STA.dat?

Re: Dynamode USB Wifi Dongle issues

I think I have everything running now.
Wicd will connect with WPA2 (AES) as will wpa-gui
Booting up into startx brings up both wlan0 and eth0.

I don't really use startx and I have read that some settings will only give one interface when booting to console. Unpluging the ethernet cable will bring up wlan0 if it didn't come up on boot. Plugging the ethernet cable back in will provide both interfaces and I guess most people will be using eth0 or wlan0, but not both.

Here are my settings.

1. make ra0 appear as wlan0

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/95-ralink.rules
and copy in the following:
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="ra*", NAME="wlan0"

2. configure interfaces

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
with the following:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
#wireless-power off
iface default inet dhcp
up iwpriv $IFACE set Debug=0

3. Set up wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
with:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
ap_scan=1
#update_config=1
network={
ssid="MYPI"
psk="ABABABABAB"

# Protocol type can be: RSN (for WP2) and WPA (for WPA1)
proto=RSN

# Key management type can be: WPA-PSK or WPA-EAP (Pre-Shared or Enterprise)
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK

# Pairwise can be CCMP or TKIP (for WPA2 or WPA1)
pairwise=CCMP

#Authorization option should be OPEN for both WPA1/WPA2 (in less commonly used are SH$
auth_alg=OPEN
}

4. Edit RT2870STA.dat

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat
Ensure you have the following entries:
SSID=MYPI
AuthMode=WPAPSK
EncrypType=AES
WPAPSK=ABABABABAB

Is there a way to install this on kernel version "3.12.18+"??? When I instelled it and then did insmod It gave me an "Invalid module format" error for /lib/modules/3.12.18+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/mt7601Usta.ko

Short answer yes but quite a lot of work unless you are a techy.

Is there anything is 3.12.18+ that you need? It is easy enough to roll back to 3.10.37+ that was the latest release 2 weeks ago.

I saw that, but the thing is i want to use rplay with my pi and it suggested using the lastest version. I was thinking about downgrading and seeing if it all works (and doing a backup with dd first just in case) but now my pi is not working because of some glitch that caused my pi's LAN9512 module to stop working when I booted up with my wifi dongle in without using a powered usb hub. I am however going to try and jumpstart it on the weekend and then if all goes well downgrade and install the drivers.

I seem to be getting a Kernel oops when using the compiled driver form scarrascoh.

I started with a new install off raspbian wheezy and updated to 3.10.37+

I installed the drivers following scarrascoh's instructions but when I plug in the usb wifi adaptor when running or boot with it plugged in I get

kernel BUG at net/core/dev.c@5574!
Internal Error: Oops BUG: 0 [#1] PREEMPT ARM

I can't seem to find any thinking in the log files relating to this so here is a photo of the display

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/807 ... l_oops.jpg

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm also getting a kernel oops but on 3.12.19 - latest on rpi-update. I adapted all the instructions to use the correct version of the kernel source, so I think it's something that's changed about Linux that the driver doesn't handle.

Here's the relevant section of my log:
