Graph & timeline of Pi Sales

Tue Apr 29, 2014 2:39 pm

Not seen a timeline and figures done anywhere in graph form, so took a shot myself:

Data from various google digging, all source links shown in the source spreadsheet here:

Interesting... the rate doesn't seem to be slowing as the market saturates (yet), if anything it's slightly exponential...

Some things you can glean from the graph:

There are around 500,000 256MB Pi model B's
There are approx 100,000 of the "rare" 256MB rev2 Pi.

15% are Rev1 models (no mounting holes)
20% of Pi are 256MB models (a fair bit more including model A)

Those google-docs embedded graphs should update themselves now ;)

mikerr,
I am a little confused, does the category Pi Rev2 256MB only include the Model B (Rev2, but before the shift to 512MB), or is it only the Model A, or is it both?

The yellow slice is only the model B 256Mb rev2 - model A's were released later.

The Model A was first released a while after all Model B's went to 512MB (check the timeline in first post).
Though there have never been figures released for Model A sales, they are included in the total Pi sales.

i.e. model A sales are a proportion of that red 83% slice, but how many is unreleased info (I'd guess 10%)

So is the figure of 100,000 from a linear interpolation of the official number of sales and the announcement dates? I was under the impression that the model B 256Mb rev2 was as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth, but 100,000 sounds like there were rather a lot of them.

Yes, it would be interesting to know.

I think 100k is about right - not as rare as people think.

Just watched Gordon Hollingworth's video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syqDIopa5rA

and confirmed a few more figures:

>2 Million made at Sony UK (my graph had estimated that at 1.8)
1 Million in China

Sony manufacture 38,000 Pi per week !

Finally have some indication of model A sales:

According to this
http://techcrunch.com/2014/10/21/pi-pads/
Eben mentioned
model A pi [has] ‘only’ sold around 100,000 vs the 4M Model B’s.
Not that popular, but not exactly a flop, 100k and 3% of total Pi.

Still no sign of market saturation yet... still exponential, at least to my eye. I'm sure the foundation's got a more accurate chart in a locked room somewhere! :D

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the curve in 6 months, once the Quad's sales have settled...

Interesting that due to increased production, Model B+ now accounts for 21% of all Pi

(figures assume no-one bought a model B after the B+ was released)

Noticing in this post your use of the word rare, i wonder how many will turn up on Ebay with the words 'Extremely Rare 256mb version' and a price value equivalent of a Ferrari lol :)

I'd seen people describing the 256Mb rev2 as "rare" since it was only produced for a few weeks before the 512mb model came out.
100k of them is less than all the other models, but not that rare...

The Pi-2 gave a huge jump in numbers, especially as they had 100k in pre-announncement stock ready to go
Image

Already 500k Pi-2's sold in a couple of weeks - that's more than the total sales of the original rev1 Pi B
- first half million pi took 8 months...

Image

Pi-2 now accounts for 10% of all Pi out there...

Hi Mikerr,

Your graph doesn't account for A+ or compute module sales, would they change the figures?

The line graph (total pi sales) includes the A+ sales but the pi(e) chart doesn't break it down.
They will be included as some small percentage of the B+ figures.

How small - "we just don't know" The foundation haven't mentioned any figures for A+ sales.

Rpi have never mentioned sales figures of the compute module either, but it's not included in PI sales AIUI.

It's weird that this information isn't publicized officially. Obviously, the RPi Foundation must have more detailed information, since I assume that they're in control of ordering the production runs or that they at least get reports based on how many boards their distributors sell, etc.

Given the information they probably have, it would be pretty easy to set up live sales estimates including detailed breakdowns by type of Pi, region of production, etc, and I don't see any reason why it would be harmful to publish at least the less-detailed figures live. If anything, it would be useful PR for the RPi Foundation (e.g. "countdown to 10 million" events).

If I remember, I'll ask them next week, hopefully popping in to Pi towers for a catchup. There may of course be specific reasons why they don't publish,. They don't have exact figures of course, since they do not do the manufacturing, that's RS and Farnell, but they usually have a general idea.
