Re: Microsoft GPG key suggestion

Although there has been a follow-up, and as I said previously we're looking into how we can change this. You assume that things can happen in days when dealing with legal issues... They can't, especially not when the legal discussions are between a company in the UK and one in the US and during the...

Re: Forum member's cameo appearance...

Although in my book its close enough to open source not to worry about it. I'm not sure where you are going with that argument. It should be made very clear to anyone who intends to use the VSCode product download, that is is subject to the terms of a closed source, proprietary, Microsoft Software ...

Re: Forum member's cameo appearance...

VSCode is NOT closed source. The vscode git repo, 'Code - OSS', is MIT licensed Open Source code. The vscode binary product that is being downloaded from Microsoft, contains Open Source code, but it is not Open Source, just because it contains some (but not all) Open Source code. The Microsoft Soft...

Re: Forum member's cameo appearance...

So what do we call SW that is mostly open, e.g. vscode? It's clearly not closed source, but not quite fully open source. Mostly open..... Not quite fully open.... ???????????????????? That's called closed source! There is no grey area. Either it is 100% Open Source, or it isn't Open Source at all. ...

Re: Microsoft GPG key suggestion

Considering there was a Blog Post from a MS Developer recently, it would appear that nothing is going to change anytime soon. Well, I suppose things could have changed, but if it is the case, it would be nice to hear it from Gordon, as it was he who posted 8 days ago, that they hadn't removed the M...

We haven't yet removed the repo from the lite version because we think we'll have a better solution in the next couple of days.
Do you have an update yet?

Re: Microsoft GPG key suggestion

Oh, I didn't even know a .deb file could have a signature. In the past I've only seen that done through signed .changes and .dsc files. Learned something new, thanks. I sign all of the packages I distribute from my private repo. eg. $ dpkg-sig --verify squeezelite_1.9.8.1344-1_armhf.deb Processing ...

Re: Microsoft GPG key suggestion

Right, the GPG key is used to sign the package list, not the individual packages. The package list then contains checksums of all the packages so apt can tell you if there's a mismatch. Yep, the code deb itself, isn't signed..... $ dpkg-sig --verify code_1.53.2-1613044047_armhf.deb Processing code_...

Re: Microsoft GPG key suggestion

Tinkering with things to learn more, it seems that the GPG key is not needed to allow installation of the code package at all... Not sure what leads you to that conclusion. Remove microsoft.gpg and "sudo apt update".... $ sudo apt update Hit:1 http://private_repo/repos/apt/raspbian buster...

Re: Microsoft GPG key suggestion

That still leaves the issue of those who will complain about the Pi Foundation suggesting the use of VSCode for use with Pi Pico. No matter what you do, you'll never placate anyone who has M$ paranoia, unless you put the M$ repo/gpg files into a new package called eg. "ms-vscode-repo", an...

I would imagine anyone into building their own VS Code is doing it to avoid contact with MS servers. Not so much a user wanting to avoid contact with M$ servers...... Is the Microsoft binary redistributable or was lack of being able to do that why the repository was added instead? "Code-OSS" does not really exist, except as the name put in my Mac menu bar when I run the thing as far as I can tell. In fact it's only a string in a config file which is easily changed: It's really simple. 'Code - OSS' is the MIT licensed Open Source code. VSCode (which is what will be ...
