Tried RaspOS X86 on an old PC, quite impressive.

XP1600, 512MB memory. Where Lubuntu 18 failed to install probably due to running out of memory using the graphical installer, raspos installed OK. Basically seems the libre office set of packages are actually usable... not too slow. Except.... 110watts for not far off same speed as maybe even a pi B...

Any plans to update raspberry desktop for x86 to bullseye

Just played a bit with latest lxde you ported to your own branch for full raspbian on a pi3 I have had running mainly headless, really only used raspbian lite headless, and it seems your desktop branch does nearly all you want from a desktop istm, like moving tasks in the task bar, quite a nice defa...

Re: Arch Linux on Pi3 refusing to boot unless hdmi connected

having dissed arch so much, think i might have a crack at gentoo (and a read of linux from scratch) LOL having run gentoo and LFS for years, nixos is a far better alternative, once you can get over the learning curve yeah, that does look like an interesting concept! as you say learning curve! what ...

Re: Arch Linux on Pi3 refusing to boot unless hdmi connected

Have you tried Raspberry Pi OS? Does that exhibit the same problems? Any reasons you want a different OS to the standard? All Linux have pretty much the same kernel under the skin [/quote] Well main reason for trying arch has just been partially negated with release of raspos bullseye which has an ...

Re: arch update slowed my python3 pygame hyperpixel 300%

One more thing regarding setting up the old hyperpixel manually, the default in config.txt is

dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d

but to make the hyperpixel and pygame work it seems you need

dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d

are the single core pi's invulnerable to spectre and meltdown?

are the single core pi's invulnerable to spectre and meltdown? (and any other hardware hypervisor attacks) as they only have one core? I'm thinking can I compile a kernel without spectre and meltdown fixes for a pi zero ? would it be faster? did anyone test the cpu performance loss of those two majo...

Re: arch update slowed my python3 pygame hyperpixel 300%

So, figured I'd shift back to raspbian, noticed had finally shifted to bullseye, had a small moment of confusion trying to install python-pip, then realised I had read pip had dropped support for python2, so plenty of reason to shift to python3 now! which I had done already anyway. so still bit of c...

arch update slowed my python3 pygame hyperpixel 300%

These sort of things annoy me! hyperpixel running on a pi zero, running a little clock display with 10's (2dp) of milliseconds display.... was chugging along at 1 update quite rock solid per 100ms, arch not been updated for months.... now its like unstable 300ms ish per frame update need a gentoo ze...

USB stick automount problems - [SOLVED]

OK so why post a solved post, well, wasted a few hours so thought I would add a note here A strange one in that the stick mounts OK until I plug in a USB serial device I have a udev rule being triggered for, then USB stick fails to mount basically if you use a timeout with the nofail option make sur...

Re: Arch Linux on Pi3 refusing to boot unless hdmi connected

I would say it is very much NOT the same, for instance the arch selection of which cron daemon (not provided by default) to run eh! (yeah well can do cron with systemd but...) and the arch page on cron daemons is a great collection of options.... and then if you drill into detail of the freaking com...

Re: Arch Linux on Pi3 refusing to boot unless hdmi connected

kind of my point is, I understand that/what-arch-is, automated builds and that, but, there is a level of testing that should be done at core level, wifi OK and Ethernet OK if either are available, and dont clucking crash if they aren't eh! and embedded systems kind of imply headless, and I reckon i ...

The point is, vc4-kms-v3d was working fine headless, then post upgrade it screws up big time headless! (I just checked it on another arch node not been on for a while and that boots headless no problem with kms-v3d I mean sure, a node permanently headless does not need it unless... think you need to...

Good one !.... "above my skill level", it's my fault that arch linux works fine before an upgrade then after an upgrade it refuses to boot so badly it does not even get to writing to the journal... and provides no clue as to the problem, and that's because it's above my skill level eh! you...

Arch Linux on Pi3 refusing to boot unless hdmi connected

Not sure if correct place to post, but if anyone else trying arch headless on a pi3 and they have just done an upgrade, that is what it is... mind boggling... they obviously don't do any testing of common use cases (i.e. running arch headless) can you use arch on a product? in my opinion no! what a ...

Re: Getting GPS (BU-353) to work with Pi3b+ and Stretch

The problem I had was in the usb connecter to the pi zero, started by using one of those with an extra bit of cable and a female full size usb slot. Once I had set the baud rate to 4800 I was getting intermittent messages swapped that usb adaptor for one of the little micro usb shim adaptors that pl...

Re: enabling bluetooth on pi zero actually wrecks the whole wifi network

Of course could be one of those coincedences, that I disabled bluetooth at the time the network just got better anyway, but that is certainly what seemed to fix it. And in fact, just now I tested it again with the pi zero in access point mode and anecdotally, connecting to it to access a python flas...

enabling bluetooth on pi zero actually wrecks the whole wifi network

Strange one I already suspected enabling bluetooth was wrecking the wifi and so on all 10 or so of my raspberrys I have bluetooth disabled in config.txt wanted to use a blutooth gps and so on one node enabled blutooth, started to see all kinds of problems on other nodes on the wifi network could not...

Re: RPi CPU temp with Python

What do you think it will tell you? Running any program will make the CPU run hotter. What do you think you can do if it runs hot? well, if you have control of the program (i.e. you wrote it or can amend it) that is driving the pi hard, then checking the cpu temperature you can slow that program do...
