Re: Using the clone tool in Buster

Hmmm, I thought I replied to this posting several days ago, but must not have actually sent the comment??? I finally got back to this experiment, that is creating a clone of an SD card, but not a clone of the OS SD card (mmc..). Using a Pi v4 running Buster. This Pi always have a USB memory stick at...

IPTables and intra-LAN traffic

My learning project to build a secure web/Email server on a Raspberry Pi V4 has progressed, it is nearly operational. However, as I'm looking through the various log files for errors or misconfigurations, I'm seeing some records in the /var/syslog file which I would like eliminate. My LAN IP address...

Using the clone tool in Buster

I have several Pi's which are either running legacy OS's (Stretch and Jessy -- "ain't broke so don't fix it") or OSMC/KODI which don't seem to have the CLONE function in the Desktop menu setup. However, I noticed with Buster that I have options for both the 'source" and "destinat...

Re: Problems with ROOT/Sudo premissions

ok, these are only work-arounds, I'm looking for something more fundamental in the setup of the Pi. I do not see this behavior on my other Pi's. Also this is the first time I've ever done anything with the wheel group. I remember using it many years ago when working on a FreeBSD box, never on one of...

Problems with ROOT/Sudo premissions

I'm following a tutorial for creating a secure web server. Working on a Pi V4 8GB running latest Buster. This is supposed to be a learning experience, as I have no real intentions of putting this Pi in the internet. So following further down in the tutorial: a. Create a wheel group, the new group fo...

Re: Installing RSA certs on Raspberry Pi 4B Buster

@trejan...Working now. File/Folder permissions were definitely the main problem. I had previously tried the other key format. Now all is working, but I have no recollection as to how I managed to create the .ssh folder with the wrong permissions. There is nothing in my notes. Oh well, MANY THANKS......

Re: Installing RSA certs on Raspberry Pi 4B Buster

@trejan...Looking this over before I get home, should this be

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R me:me ~/.ssh
and not

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R me.me ~/.ssh
. The difference is the : instead of the .

Thanks....RDK

Re: Installing RSA certs on Raspberry Pi 4B Buster

@trejan.....OK, I will give this a try. Note, I used PuTTYgen to generate my private and public keys and NOT the ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048 . I used the later to generate the keys used by Visual Studio Code. For PuTTY I read that one had to use the PuTTYgen function to create the PuTTY keys?. What I ...

Re: Installing RSA certs on Raspberry Pi 4B Buster

I have edited my last post to correct the "me" conflict. PuTTY connects with the id/pw and without the Key being installed using 22 or my alternate port 9922. Is it normal that chmod is throwing that error? By the way, when I'm configured with the key I get this error when I try to connect...

Re: Installing RSA certs on Raspberry Pi 4B Buster

OK, In my notes from previous work I do not see where I did anything with the permissions on /home/me/.ssh folder or the authorized_keys file, both of which I created. But I tried the following: 1. chmod 700 ~/.ssh chmod: changing permissions of '/home/me/.ssh': Operation not permitted 2. chmod 600 ...

Installing RSA certs on Raspberry Pi 4B Buster

I'm about stumped! I have several (about 10) various Pi hardware and OS's with RSA and/or PuTTY SSH Authentication keys which are working with either PuTTY and/or Visual Studio Code apps. I'm in the process of building up a new Pi V4B with the new Buster OS. Today I tried to set it up with SSH authe...

Confused about IPTables and NFTables

I just installed Raspbian on a new Pi V4 8GB from the SD card that came with the kit. This is what I get to identify the OS: cat /etc/os-release PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)" The kernel version is 5.10.17-v7l+ I'm experimenting with setting this Pi up as a LAN webserver but ...

Re: Raspberry 4B 2-wire fan does not start

I just took the unit apart and there are no markings on the fan: voltage or amps. I did power cycle the unit and the fan started up automatically. Looking at the box, Ninkbox appears to be a German outfit. I'm tempted to order a couple additional 2-wire fans, I see lots of them for sale. That way I ...

Raspberry 4B 2-wire fan does not start

I have a new Raspberry Pi 4B 8 GB. I noticed yesterday that it was hot and also that the fan was not turning. I nudged it with a pen and it started right up. Is this a general issue or do I just have a bad fan? The fan is a two wire unit using pins 2 and 4. I have not found (in France) the new ones ...

Re: Connecting a Pi to a PC - continued

absorberet....I'm not clear on exactly what you are doing or want to do? The only way I have found to connect from my PC to my Pi is 1) using PuTTY on the PC and 2) knowing the address Windows (I assume you are using Windows?) has assigned to the Pi when it was connected via the Ethernet cable. As I...

I like the history command as a reminder of what I have done on that Pi, but it would also be nice to have the corresponding date. Is that possible?
