Re: Chromium crashes trying to open YouTube

It's come back now after a week of not crashing. Random.
There are multiple forum threads popping up saying the same thing.
Back to firefox-esr or some other workaround mention above

Re: Chromium crashes trying to open YouTube

Firefox-esr hasn't crashed this way on pi. Been using that since this YouTube +/ Chromium bug. It's not hardware accelerated for video though...only one tab open, never fullscreen, and no other tasks ongoing or CPU maxes out.

The crashing's come back on a fresh install of rpios with all updates. It was alright for a while but now it's not.

Re: Chromium crashes trying to open YouTube

I've just made two new images today, tried them in different pi4's and YouTube played ok.

Can't explain why older images still have this problem, even though they're also up-to-date.

Yeah wtf? I'm getting this too, started today - probably with an update.

Clearing browsing data didn't fix the problem.

Re: media videos broken since update

There are these small white boxes appearing in webpages that weren't there before rpi-update and upgraded Chromium.

Nothing i can't live with.

Worth the occasional visual artefact so i can use YouTube with hardware acceleration.

Hopefully gets addressed

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-update
Worked for me.
If you're worried about corrupting your o/s then maybe give it a miss, as it installs test firmware.

Oh, and Chromium's just been updated in the repo. Do that first.

Re: media videos broken since update

UPDATES! available from repo

apt upgrade to get latest Chromium (92.0.4515.98)

rpi-update to get latest 'test' firmware/kernel (5.10.63-v7l+ #1456 SMP Thu Sep 23)

Youtube.com problems appear to have stopped....

Re: media videos broken since update

YouTube.com's been broken for a few weeks on the pi 4 with Chromium browser.
You can either disable hardware acceleration in Chromium settings, or risk rolling back firmware to a time when it ran ok (using rpi-update).
Or thirdly, install Firefox through terminal. None of these workarounds are ideal

Re: Youtube: If playback does not begin shortly try restarting your device

I hope they're working on getting Youtube playback fixed!
It seems they've just fixed a problem users were having with drm video streaming e.g Netflix.

Could be something unique to youtube videos like the codec not playing nicely with Chromium's hardware acceleration and the pi's firmware.

Re: YouTube playback broken by recent update, and other streaming sites too

I rolled back firmware / kernel: sudo rpi-update 87cbee36378479a500d196fdb2a896b2039d5f91 Now videos load every single time in Youtube using Chromium browser. No more errors on video streaming sites, and can keep Chromium's option for hardware acceleration enabled. (The sweet spot as ever on the pi ...

The Chromium packaged with Raspberry Pi OS has additional patches applied to it to allow hardware accelerated video decoding. Yeah, about that... YouTube playback broken by recent update, and other streaming sites too

Some videos play, some do not, some give the error message "if playback does not begin shortly try restarting your device" It wasn't there a few weeks ago. Download the latest image and try YouTube before and after updates. Somewhere else on this forum a person recently found that disablin...

Re: Youtube: If playback does not begin shortly try restarting your device

Yes i noticed this problem with a recent update to a kernel or something, which is why i've not updated the pi on the lounge tv. May have something to do with having multiple youtube tabs open at same time, which is how many of us use the web anyway. Wasn't a problem a couple of weeks ago. you could...

Re: In total RaspberryOS no Screen tearing

I'd like to add that the latest Manjaro KDE Plasma uses x11 compositor on the pi4 and doesn't screen-tear.

Latest Ubuntu Desktop, which uses wayland, also doesn't screen-tear on pi4.

Have you disabled compositor on PiOS? That helps with fullscreen-ed apps like vlc, chromium.

Very impressive YT playback! Ubuntu 21.04 gives the user a choice of both the default Wayland, and Xorg, in case some apps don't work properly. Well played Canonical, indeed. Wonder what's next for the Foundation in terms of graphical performance on the desktop. Would Wayland or full Kms development...

Re: Ubuntu 20.10 and Netflix

Would be amazing if Ubuntu 64bit got official widevine support, since Chromium streams YouTube really well in yesterday's new Ubuntu desktop release.
Netflix etc. would take it to the next level!
Swapping sd cards between PiOS and other OSes is the way to go for drm.

TV Hat + Pi zero = usb tuner dongle for another pi 4? Or not?

Would that be possible? Would allow more than one tuner feeding into a pi4, meaning Tvheadend can use more of these tuners, meaning more than one mux can be watched and recorded at once. Sorry if been asked before. Edit: Just realized that power requirement might be too much for the pi4's usb port. ...

[Tvheadend Guide] How to find TV channels from Winter Hill transmitter in NW England.

Due to a recent change in broadcast frequencies for dvb-t television from the Winter Hill transmitter you may struggle find them in TVHeadend. When you first try to add a dvb-t network, TVHeadend provides a list of predefined muxes (multiplexes) for Winter Hill but these are out of date. Leave the &...
