Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.9

Hello, I installed the 5.9 V8 kernel, and then enabled the full KMS driver. I then (because I like some danger) ran `sudo apt install kde-standard` and selected SDDM as default display manager when asked. I logged and everything worked almost perfectly! I opened up KDE, and all I can say is Wow. Som...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.9

Actually, I just discovered another, completely different glitch that might negate the pixel shift. I ran 'uname -a' after I posted about the pixel shift, and noticed that it said I was on... 5.4? I ran 'sudo BRANCH=next rpi-update', and it said I was up-to-date. Later reading the messages, it final...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.9

I downloaded a fresh copy of Raspbian, ran 'rpi-update' to get onto the 5.9 branch, switched from FKMS to KMS, and enabled the V8 kernel. When I finally got to the desktop (I'm assuming this is a new KMS glitch), I noticed that the leftmost 1px column of the desktop on my 1920x1080 monitor was messe...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.9

Compiled it with the exFAT module enabled for the Pi 4 2GB. It's running a Plex Server headless with an external exFAT SSD attached for the media files. I know this isn't much surface area being tested, but (as of writing) it's the very latest on the rpi-5.9.y branch (commit ae39d1c) and is working ...

Re: Linux 5.9 released

Hello, I thought I'd post a little anecdote about this kernel building, partially because it doesn't really fit anywhere else but still offers some potentially helpful feedback. I was setting up a Plex Server on the Raspberry Pi 4 2GB model, with an external SSD plugged into it. Because all of the c...

Actually, according to the MagPi, there is a way to run Android on the Pi.

Re: When are people in the U.S. getting their Pi 4s?

I personally don't have many "long-term" uses of the Pi. I just experiment a lot. And because I might use the same Pi for a variety of experiments, I always order what is top-of-the-line. (I don't have any Model As for this reason). I'm sure I'm not alone.

Re: When are people in the U.S. getting their Pi 4s?

Hello, I have a few updates for everyone on this thread. element14 : Some people (including myself) noticed the date slipping from July 5, to 8, to 10, to 12, to 16... So, I talked to element14, and they said that they actually are getting a shipment in SEPTEMBER. The system is just automatically sh...

Re: When are people in the U.S. getting their Pi 4s?

I'm in the US, and I bought the 4GB version about 14 hours or so after launch on Newark Element14. Shipping July 5 (today). I bought the official case and power supply from Chicago Electric Distributors. They have already arrived. UDPATE: Turns out that element14 does not have stock and will not hav...

Re: Why doesn't the next Pi add...? Why doesn't the Pi 4 have...? The definitive debunking!

Simple, board space and power. At least stub one of the HDMI ports. Then use a pliers and pull the extra microHDMI off. Not a problem! Edit: Power? If you don't have any displays connected, you aren't using any power. Board Space? I would think that, if that mattered to you, those GPIO pins and USB...

@jcyr Your post came off as so incredibly selfish and derogatory (you seriously think that the USB-C decision was because of the "lowest common denominator"? I assume you mean kids and first-timers.) And tropes, seriously? Just because it is a trope doesn't make it wrong or misguided - and...

Added more commentary, a new section on why 64-bit Raspbian isn't a thing, and balanced opinion slightly.

Re: Why doesn't the next Pi add...? Why doesn't the Pi 4 have...? The definitive debunking!

Interesting! I wonder if @jamesh could weigh in on why this would not have worked (probably cost, licensing fees, IP, board space, that sort of thing). Edit: I also wonder if this wasn't compatible with combining Power (3A!) and Display data. This might have been an unwieldy adapter that might not e...

Any defense will come off as slightly fanboy-ish regardless of the truth within. If you have any ideas on how to fix it or make it more neutral-sounding, let me know. Also, it does matter. When YouTube videos with over 100K views exist spreading misinformation and leaving out important facts exist a...

Why doesn't the next Pi add...? Why doesn't the Pi 4 have...? The definitive debunking!

Hello, I've just been reading a lot of online comments on Reddit, these forums, and even on YouTube reviews about the Pi 4 and have read complaints that the RPT has repeatedly answered and yet keep getting asked. So, I've compiled a bunch of the "complaints" here, and my hope is that the R...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

It is total amazing watching an empty google page and watching on my PC via ssh the pi4 temperature and htop. 4 Cores maximum load and the pi4 reaches 80°C and it starts to throttle. I already installed small heat sinks on the CPU but i am not sure how much it helps. The over temperature icon shows...

Official Power Supply Question

Hello. I know this is a really, really odd question. I have a new official Raspberry Pi power supply coming, and I am wondering what would happen if I wasn't using my Pi and used it to charge a phone (or if someone got it mixed up as a phone charger). Phones charge at about 2.1A, but the charger out...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

By my reckoning, it will fit into a RPi3B official case with that side removed, as a temporary measure until the RPi4B official case is available. It is available, but in such limited quantities. For anyone in the US, Chicago Electric Distributors still has some: https://chicagodist.com/collections...

The latest firmware from rpi-update lets you OC past 1750mhz. I've hit a wall at 2Ghz where is refuses to boot at anything higher, but that could just be the limits of my pi. How stable is 2GHz? What are you using for cooling? Is any overvolting used? Update: Obligatory WARNING for anyone reading t...

Re: What limits RPi4 OC to 1750 MHz?

You are not alone with this. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/raspberry-pi-4-b-overclocking,6188.html The second setting, arm_freq=1750, sets the clock speed of the SoC’s four Arm Cortex-A72 processor cores to 1,750MHz or 1.75GHz, an increase of 250MHz over the stock 1.5GHz setting. At the time ...
