Re: Adding an HDD to Pi

The maximum is 1200mA shared between the 4 USB Ports, as stated above, therefore you could use a 5v 10A Power Supply and it will not make a difference. The Official Power Supply is recommended because at 5.1V 3A it is rock solid and more than adequate. I agree with the quote above - except - regarl...

Re: Adding an HDD to Pi

A lot depends on what model of Pi it is, and how you are powering it. For example, the genuine Pi power supply for the Pi 4B is something like 3.5 Amps, but it can have trouble powering a 2TB USB 3 external HDD. I seem to have no problems with USB 3 500GB SSD drives but haven't tried big ones. I use...

Re: Why does my Raspberry Pi turn my TV ON ?

People in various places (on forums) ask 'can a Raspberry Pi replace my Desktop PC. Looks like it can (at least the 8GB version of Pi4B), and according to the previous repl;y it might be able to be a complete little entertainment box. I was concerned that this 'turning on the TV' thing might be rela...

Re: Why does my Raspberry Pi turn my TV ON ?

Magic ! Thanks. So If I'm understanding the Wikipedia article correctly, my TV has CEC enabled and somehow the Raspberry Pi can interact in a way that wakes the TV from standby, just as if I picked up the remote and hit the Power Button on the remote. I'm still fascinated that the Pi can do this by ...

Why does my Raspberry Pi turn my TV ON ?

I'm curios about this - but it is NOT a problem. When I switch my Raspberry Pi 4B on in the morning, a few moments later, my monitor (a 55 inch TV connected to the Pi via HDMI) switches ON, and moments after that, my Pi desktop appears. None of my other computers connected to the TV do this - only t...

Re: USB hub that can power 2 overclocked RPi 4B's with ~4 external USB drives

So I've no idea where you're going to find a hub with a 12A PSU. It might exist...maybe. I went the other way. For a month or so my Pi 4B has been powered by a (relatively) cheap 'Comsol' brand 5V 5A USB C power adapter, which so far is letting me supply power to the USB 3 ports of the Pi happily, ...

Raspi and Brother Printer - August 2021

There was a Beginners' thread on using the Pi with a Brother Printer, but things have changed. Early in the year I had a Pi4B 4Gig, which I gave away to someone. Recently I bought the 8GB model, and set it up. More recently I have been playing with connecting all my computers over VNC. One of the fi...

Re: Pi 4B Broken Component - Advice please?

Thanks everyone who made a suggestion. I've been finding a solution to the low power problem with my current 8GB Pi 4B ( doesn;t like high capacity external drives - often has low voltage warning even with noexternal drive and official power supply). I'll try to get hold of the Pi with the problem c...

Re: Low voltage warning despite official power supply?

I had this problem from the moment I started running a large capacity USB external hard drive from the Pi 4B. Clicking noises from the drive as it was spinning up (a relatively new drive that is fine on other computers) and the low voltage message in the top right corner all the time. The Pi is in a...

Re: STICKY: How to use Autostart - Raspberry Pi OS (Desktop)

I had a cow of a time getting Autostart working for my Pi4B. I could not get the RealVNC server that comes with the Pi (Enabled in raspi-config under 'Interfaces'). In the end I installed tigervnc-scraping-server (which is in the repos) sudo apt install tigervnc-scraping-server and that worked. Oddl...

Thanks. I'll see if he can read any markings on the cap and see if an equivalent is available at somewhere like Jaycar. We don;t have a lot of component suppliers these days since electronics as a hobby seems to have more or less died. If it is a common value I imagine an old style capacitor could b...

Re: Pi 4B Broken Component - Advice please?

Thanks. I'm too old to attempt board level stuff now even if he sent it to me. However, I wondered, is that U shaped thing in the dark bit of board, the spot where the copper pad used to make contact? Back in my day, if it was, I might have found a way to solder a jumper wire from there to the coppe...

Turn ON the Bookmarks bar in your web browser. Create a folder for each main subject you might be interested in and one for 'STUFF'. Some Folders on my Chromium Bookmarks Bar on my Pi 4 are: MEDIA - YouTube - HISTORY - TRAVEL - LINUX - Lifestyle - OddStuff You can fit about 9 folders along the Chrom...

Chris, I've just checked omxplayerGUI on my Pi 4 and it is playing an .m4a audio file fine (I don't have any .mp3 files on this SSD, but it was also playing them last time I checked). On the bottom right corner of the omxplayerGUI window is a slider. It doesan;t have a name, and usually the control ...

I noticed that Raspbian on 'my' Pi 4 regularly loses icons from the panel. This has been happening even after regular full / dist upgrades for the months I have had my Pi 4. It has also happened with fresher installs right up to the latest Busty. Usually, a simple fix is to open a Terminal and use: ...

Re: Pi4 64-bit raspbian kernel for testing - Focus on Pi4

And as of today, Kodi only works with a 64 bit kernel on Raspbian if you update the kernel/firmware with rpi-update tool, it won't work with the current kernel/firmware available on the repos. Answers my question perfectly, thanks. And yes, it is working perfectly for me so far on the Linux raspber...
