Re: 64-bit ubuntu 19.10 wifi not working
I can only tell you how I install, which is to use the mini iso. Because you have a pi4 and there is no generic kernel for this yet, then it is a bit of an ordeal. I wrote instructions for using the raspi2 kernels with the mini iso here https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/aarch64-on-raspberry-pi-2-rev-1...

Re: Ubuntu unity desktop environment
Its been a year since I last had a go, but I've been reading about the progress. Do you know why marius is using the arm64 kernel in his image? Things may work better under the armhf kernel. Is 16.04 still the recommended base?

I know nothing bout the pi4, but have you tried adding
to config.txt?
Code: Select all
# Enable audio (loads snd_bcm2835)
dtparam=audio=on

I had a play with unity8 on the pi ages ago. I think it has lots of potential, it's on my list of things to do again over the winter.

Re: 64-bit ubuntu 19.10 wifi not working
Trying to refamiliarise myself with how networking works, there are plenty of useful links out there: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1033826/ubuntu-18-04-server-raspberry-pi-wireless https://askubuntu.com/questions/1143287/how-to-setup-of-raspberry-pi-3-onboard-wifi-for-ubuntu-server-18-04 https://...

Re: Roadmap for pi 4 support
Sort of. Ubuntu server on the pi are actually cloud images so you get some extra packages. I've never really been sure what the cloud packages do except slowing my boot time (and I'm not sure if this is still the case). Consequently I always install from the mini iso so I get to choose my username, ...

No don't do that.
Somebody on here may very well know the answer. I can tell you how to do it if you are willing to re-install.
If you do want to ask on another site, then Askubuntu.com is the place. Note it is not a forum - strict questions and answers only.

Re: Boot time on original Pi
My French is very rusty, but I think I can follow that! (Goggle translate helps!) Thanks. Your project looks very impressive and professional. I had a quick go with TinyCore and PiCorePlayer as suggested by fruitoftheloom earlier. TinyCore boots in around 11 seconds on the 1B. PiCorePlayer about 20 ...

Re: Boot time on original Pi
Thanks all for the replies. @hippy I used the stretch lite image dated 2018-03-13 since that is the one I already had downloaded. I think the boot waits for dhcp if you don't have ethernet connected (this can be turned off by raspi-config though). Stretch on 1B: ~$ systemd-analyze blame 15.895s dhcp...

Argh! I was reading the wrong numbers. Edited post above.
Buster lite is definitely slower to boot than stretch was.

Re: Boot time on original Pi
For the original RPi you are likely better off using RISC OS, and using one of the Internet Radio streamers for RISC OS. Unfortunately Raspbian has been getting slower on the old BCM2835 Raspberry Pi systems, even though they still sell the BCM2835 systems. Thanks David. I'm very fond of RiscOs fro...

Re: Boot time on original Pi
Wow thanks again!
I've worked out now why the 3B was giving a stupidly slow boot for me. I didn't have the ethernet cable plugged in. With it connected the timings are better. Buster lite (16). Stretch lite (11).
Buster lite still noticeably slower even on the 3B.

Re: Boot time on original Pi
Thank you again hippy for the detailed results. I've been able to do a few experiments myself tonight.
I make it that buster lite is around 10 seconds slower than stretch on the 1Brev2 (39 v 29). Amazingly my 3B is 25 seconds slower (36 v 11) - much slower than your 3B result.

Re: Boot time on original Pi
Thanks hippy that's the kind of thing I was after. It must be my mind playing tricks on me. I knew originally the pi boot was slow, but I was convinced stretch had speeded it up to around 20 seconds. It's been a while.
Will have to get the super glue out to fix the SD card holder.

Re: Boot time on original Pi
Again, I'm not interested in distro suggestions. (Though thank you.) I can Google reasonably well. I'm interested in people's actual experiences. I've seen 12 seconds written for a pi zero. Is that achievable?

Re: Boot time on original Pi
Thanks, but that's not how I want to use it. I want to turn on the old stereo and have the plugged in internet radio respond as soon as possible in case I want to change station while I'm standing up. No remotes, phones, laptops controlling it.

Boot time on original Pi
I have a Raspberry Pi Model B Rev 2.0. For the vast majority of its life it has lived in a cupboard. About every two years I get it out the cupboard and think about turning it into an internet radio. Normally after I've pondered on how to do this for a bit it gets put back in its cupboard. I've reac...

Re: Strange boot folder transformation in ubuntu 18.10!?
You can modify the fstab if you want so that the kernel mounts the boot partition at /boot instead, but then flash-kernel will fail when the kernel is updated. In Ubuntu/Debian you can't do this. Or more precisely if you do the kernel packages will fail to install even before flash-kernel is trigge...

Re: Strange boot folder transformation in ubuntu 18.10!?
There is no boot folder on partition 1. In Raspbian p1 is mounted at /boot. In Ubuntu/Debian p1 is mounted at /boot/firmware. All kernels are installed to /boot. Ubuntu copies the latest kernel from /boot to /boot/firmware (so p1) so that the GPU firmware can read it. It wouldn't have to do this if ...

Re: Strange boot folder transformation in ubuntu 18.10!?
/boot is used to store the various kernels. It is not used directly by the pi firmware if that is what you mean. It would be used if you had grub2 installed (note typically a pi kernel is missing the necessary module (efi stub) to allow grub2 booting).

Not at all. A directory can have different contents depending if/how it is mounted. That is what your thread is about.

Re: Not able to succesfully flash kali linux
Your problem is likely the card reader. I've had one that worked great for copying files, but failed when writing images. Try another card reader. This. I'm amazed I often see card readers from pound shops recommended. It is in my experience possibly the worst advice you can ever give someone. I've...
