Re: tracking the location of multiple pieces of equipment

In the logistics industry there are lots of trackers/apps that already do this. Some use active power, e.g. vehicle trackers, and some use battery power and report less frequently, e.g. container trackers. If you don't need to know your equipment's exact location while in transit between your own si...

Re: BLE Characteristic cannot be read

Hi, yeah, sorry, I thought you were the OP. I actually didn't see your glib warning either so this is probably not be related at all (but I'll clarify for anyone else coming along that might get connection dropping). Anyway, what I was getting at is that unless you have the doc from the manufacturer...

Re: BLE Characteristic cannot be read

I don't know that this is the reason but some ble devices definitely have their own handshaking sequence that really only the manufacturer will know (or you can use a packet capture tool to see how a successful connection is achieved with the phone app). Does the phone app require a password? If so ...

Re: Info on radio tx power wattage (BLE)

"Measured Power" is part of the standard packet data sent by iBeacons, AltBeacons, and EddyStone beacons and that's supposed to reflect the transmission power (which you use with the RSSI to roughly gauge proximity). So if you can config your device as one of those beacons you can get the ...

Re: Raw data from BLE Scanner

The Minew i3 can be configured as an EddyStone beacon it appears, which includes battery level in it's packets. The EddyStone packet format is well documented so just google around and you'll see it. For what it's worth our platform, the OmnIoT SoftHub can connect to any standard EddyStone beacon an...

Re: LORA vs Bluetooth 5.0 vs Zigbee for indoor use with obstacles..

In that case, if the wifi bridge(s) cover the whole building, you could probably get away with having multiple RP zero/w's (10-20 bucks each depending on where you buy them) where each connects to a few rooms worth of sensors. You could probably even extend that range somewhat if you find some BLE 5...

Re: LORA vs Bluetooth 5.0 vs Zigbee for indoor use with obstacles..

Honestly a lot will depend on what specifically you are trying to achieve. What sensors you want to attach (are you going to need to use off the shelf sensors or are you thinking of building them yourself?), your budget, what you need to do with your data (just send it to a remote server or build so...

Re: Bluetooth 5.0 actual performance with Pi 4

It's probably been pointed out above but the Pi 4, while integrating BLE 5 hardware, doesn't support the BLE 5 long range features (yet at least). Basically that means that a traditional long range BLE pairing (or connection, or whatever) would be limited to the range of the Pi radio since it can't ...

Re: Which Pi to use for MQTT and Node-Red

You might also look at the OmnIoT SoftHub instead of Node-Red (it's also free). It has a tiny footprint / resource requirement and can do the threshold checking and automated sending of emails and/or sms messages. It's more oriented to wireless sensor data though, so might not be a fit...

Re: Raspberry Pi at scale - I am using raspberry py for my IoT device and looking for a good solution for scaling

You may definitely know something I don't, but in building our Raspberry Pi IoT platform (the OmnIoT SoftHub ) we create an image with our full environment and then save that image using Win32 DiskImager. Then we burn that image to additional SD cards and put those cards in other Pi's and have never...

It's been a while and, while we can see a steady stream of forum users downloading the SoftHub install package and visiting our youtube channel, we haven't received a ton of feedback. To help new users get up and running quickly we've been thinking of adding a new library of canned RuleFiles that pe...

Re: Bluetooth Presence Detection to Trigger GPIO

If the iphone can be configured as an iBeacon then the OmnIoT SoftHub can do this really simply. I know iPhones are capable to run as iBeacon's but I'm not sure if it's by default or you need to do something special (I imagine you would). At any rate, the SoftHub can be configured really easily to d...

Here's a video using the wired switch mentioned earlier doing something similar (controlling a light). If you have any questi...

Re: Reading data via a Bluetooth module

Our application, the OmnIoT SoftHub , turns a Pi (or even a Pi zero/w) into a BLE/ANT hub/gateway. It pre-supports a bunch of sensors, several of which report humidity. Additionally, for future expansion it's very easy to drop additional sensors in (which is to say you can mix and match sensors in y...

It might me overkill for what you're doing but the OmnIoT SoftHub could do this super quick. It's free as long as you don't resell it, it runs on the Pi, and it already supports standard BLE and ANT heart rate monitors so it'd be a simple thing of creating a rule that says "when the HR goes ove...

Probably you are on the right track, but (1) is there a mobile app available for it? A lot of times you can just use that to see how the data changes while you record the packets and then correlate what the app values are to the raw bits, and (2) not to sound obvious but did you contact the manufact...

I've never really tried though probably not. Since it (the SoftHub) takes control of the linux ble subsystem and NodeRed will likely try to do the same thing. That said, to be honest from what I gather from what you described the SoftHub could do everything you need so there would be no need for Nod...

Bluez blutoothctl scan vs hcitool scan

Hi, I'm running bluez 5.50 on a Raspberry Pi (both Buster and Stretch). I have a ble sensor device that advertises data only when a button on the sensor device is pressed. So advertisements are asynchronous and there are no periodic advertisements in between. I'm having an issue with bluez though wh...
