Re: VLC Media Player fix!

Repeatable behaviour found - getting closer! Might be tied to fonts. On my machines and screens .. If one chooses the defaults for Medium-Screens in the Appearance>Defaults menu, and makes no further adjustments to the system fonts , then VLC works as expected. Removing and reinstalling vlc is no qu...

Re: VLC Media Player fix!

DRAT! This solution isn't repeatable. It's back, although this time the top level menu's have gone away on another machine.

Gonna' work on it for a *repeatable* solution amongst several boxes. Um, nothing to see here except someone putting foot in mouth. :)

VLC Media Player fix!

On some of my systems I install RPI Desktop for PC/MAC to, when I fire up VLC Media Player, a large horizontal bar covers much of the screen and is impossible to get rid of - there are no handles available to close that unreadable popup. But there is an easy fix. It reads like a lot, but once you do...

Re: Dual-Boot the EASY way!

Ignoring for the moment the ability to reach the firmware, here is one reason given by the sdcard association to use their formatter - because some deviate from the spec: https://www.sdcard.org/press/thoughtleadership/the-sd-memory-card-formatterhow-this-handy-tool-solves-your-memory-card-formatting...

Re: Dual-Boot the EASY way!

Heh, ok I was trying to keep it on the light-hearted side. Rather than let this go into endless debate, I think Eben would have the pull to confirm that only the SDcard association has the keys to get into your card, and reprogram the firmware - along with doing a reformat. Otherwise, their formatte...

Does it have to be an Altair? How about an IMSAI 8080 kit! If you want to flip switches, the guys over at thehighnibble.com seem popular. Dave does a lot of kit build and operation vids, there the "IMSAI GUY" - here's one that might seem interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOXpLKA...

Re: software upgrade statistics?

I think more likely education is the cover story Nope it was for education right from the start. The fact that industry spotted the potential of these cheap, reliable, tiny, well supported computers means industry is not stupid. Sometimes success is measured by a different metric. Yep. It goes furt...

Re: Dual-Boot the EASY way!

P.S. - if you've become a fan of installing the RPI Desktop for PC/MAC on SD / micro-sd cards, just know that the out of box format is "tuned" internally in firmware for Windows or Mac. Even if you reformat with Linux, it can't touch the firmware. What? Why should I care? We need to go dee...

Dual-Boot the EASY way!

So you want to dual-boot the RPI Desktop for PC/MAC with another operating system, but just don't want to go nerd-like levels (I am one) to do so with multi-partitioning, or becoming a Grub wizard. Tip: If your machine has SD-card or micro-SD card slots, and the bios allows you to boot from them, co...

Sounds like a hardware issue cropping up, since you can no longer even boot the original usb image. I'd try making a new one with a *new* flash-drive as your first diagnostic step.

Is that an NVMe ssd? Makes me wonder if that ssd is not compatible with the machine. Other searches revealed turning off raid-support in bios, although I can't imagine that for that old netbook. But mebbe' ... NVMe is supported, but it might be a hardware boot/ recognition thing for a circa 2008 bas...

The most common answer I find when searching for this is to upgrade your version of Putty to 0.67 or greater.

Re: Gateway NV7802u backlight issue

More of a Debian thing, which the RPI Desktop for PC/MAC rests upon. What were the "old fixes" you used? I've run into this with that chipset long ago, and had to use the i915.invert_brightness or i915.invert_brightness=1 as a kernel boot parameter. Frustrating, as the screen brightness is...

Re: Unable to boot Raspberri Pi Desktop 4.19 on ProDesk 400 G6

How long did you wait? Sometimes systemd will wait for a timeout for ethernet for example if it isn't attached or wireless configured. I'd try again with the latest version, (release Jul 1, 2022) Sometimes what you describe can be worked around by using the "nomodeset" option as a kernel p...

More of a Debian thing than here.

However, don't let this stop you if it results in more gray hairs. :)

While waiting / testing for a solution, purchase an inexpensive usb <> ethernet dongle. Nearly universally recognized and will get you on the air with the RPI Desktop for PC/MAC easily.

Redshift blue-light filter works well with RPI Desktop PC/MAC

So it is past midnight and my eyes are bleeding on the forum. Looked for a blue-light filter, and am happy to report that "Redshift" from the software repo works fine, albeit with a small quirk. It shows up in the menu structure, so if you click on it, you'll be running two instances of it...

Re: Help installing firmware for Broadcom [14e4:4320] and [14e4:4311]

If you have a spare usb port available, it might be a better idea to use a more modern usb<>wifi dongle instead. I have used some branded "Panda", and they are listed as Linux compatible out of the box relying on non-proprietary drivers, so nothing to install or fiddle with. There are othe...

Sounds like you have changed your boot device to run the RPI Desktop PC/Mac live. Then when you install, did you forget to remove the live usb before it asks for reboot? Been there when I was in a hurry and forgot.

Ah, do you mean the LXpanel? Perhaps you have hidden it and forgot.

To get back to it:

Roll mouse to top of screen until it appears.
Right-click.

Panel Settings > Advanced > Automatic Hiding

UNcheck:

I'm not into retro-computing either and wouldn't go back if I could - however the *ideals* are still sound. I guess I'm in an appreciative mood for both Cambridge and Dartmouth based upon what's under my fingertips, albeit it is a long historical stretch of things not implemented to be productized.....
