Re: Data cable distance for Hall Sensors etc. SOLVED

Thanks to all for the ideas and suggestions. Sorry for confused OP re I2C. It is now working fine (for now) with twisted pair for Gnd and Data with 5v on another single wire of a twisted pair. Slip ring not an issue so far but it's not expected to turn much either. It will probably turn at a maximum...

Re: Data cable distance for Hall Sensors etc.

Mettauk's sensor isn't I2C. It is a basic hall effect sensor with a digital output that pulls low when it senses a magnetic field. The signal line is pulled up to 5V with a 10K resistor so that isn't going to be good for the Pi GPIO. Ug, what can I do to rectify overloading with more than 3.3v from...

Re: Data cable distance for Hall Sensors etc.

I2C was originally designed for transfer between ICs on the same board so it is common for long wires to cause trouble. A lot depends on the chip too with many failing when you get over a meter or two. I've been able to manage up to 5-10 meters using couple CAT5 pairs with 220r series resistors and...

Re: Data cable distance for Hall Sensors etc.

Is this just a on/off signal on GPIO17? It can't be I2C and I don't know of any 1-wire hall effect sensors. Pi GPIOs aren't 5V tolerant so if your sensor is also outputting 5V then it may damage it. The Hall sensor is a Sunfounder one.. https://www.sunfounder.com/products/switch-hall-sensor?_pos=2&...

shielded cables perhaps?
Wondering more about reducing power/signal loss than interference but will find some Cat7 or similar and give it a go.

Data cable distance for Hall Sensors etc.

I'm trying to log data from a Hall Sensor. (Possibly other I2c stuff at some point) It works fine with the sensor about 500mm away without issue from the pi including going through a slip ring. I want to extend this distance to about 3.5m. I tried with some 24awg Cat6 UTP cable (all copper) plus gol...

Re: vcgencmd measure_temp causes freeze up

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. The Power supply is a standard RPi white supply, 5.1v 2.4a supply, enough juice for a 3b+ and it seems to be working just fine. This is happening on a Pi ZeroW I could have been clearer, if I run the command vcgencmd measure_temp the session freezes up before givin...

It's part of the Bluetooth stuff. If you don't need to use Bluetooth you can disable it with sudo systemctl disable hciuart
Thanks. Is this permanent or just for a given run/session? IF I want to use Bluetooth at some future point, what do I do to enable/fix Bluetooth

nohup and -u

HI I'm trying to run a python3 script that logs data and outputs to screen. most of the time I want it to run in the background so I use nohup Myfile.py & but this causes the log file to buffer and I was told if I add -u it should stop this and just write as it goes along. If I run nohup -u /hom...

Re: ina260 energy monitor

Oh, really, how and what are these settings and how do I know what values to use?

I "simply" want to know what my little 3d printed turbine is putting out in DC for given measured rpm. Somewhere between 0 and 25v max around 4amps, probably less, but I don't know.

I'm making a small wind turbine (3d print) and want to log energy output and rpm over time. I have sorted the rpm logging and have bought an Adafruit INA260 which I hope is the right thing to measure and log turbine output?! Recording RPM via Hall Sensor and data not saving?

I found some python code to record RPM for my 3d printed wind turbine. If I run it via Putty with python tachometer.py I get print err...

It looks like you are running jessie. The most current OS is buster. This means not only has jessie been archived but so has stretch.

I would not run the "dist-upgrade" option without making a backup the the SD card.
