Re: can i replce my isp Modem/router ?

if you dont trust the isp router, and add a second router, thats double-nat, and it causes all kinds of problems Wow. What sort of problems ? I've been doing that for years and never had any problems so far. edit: Oh, I see, a couple of "rare" use cases which I don't run into. No port for...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.15

Today I have implemented both ntfs3 and ksmbd. Good oh. Thanks for the link to instructions ! Did you see this the info in link https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?p=1955479#p1955479 about kernel samba ksmbd ? It seems eminently possible that "non-ksmbd" samba may be "better...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.15

edit: I don't know if the Pi 4 network adapter hardware has RDMA capability My guess is that samba may integrate with it in the future. In the meantime if you have no particular desire to experiment I would just stick to normal Samba. Yes, I'd thought that too, however was seeking advice from anyon...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.15

Hello. I just saw this description which I think is of the new SMB in the Raspberry Pi OS kernel (with the new NTFS3 and SMB_SERVER) anticipated for 5.15 https://samba.plus/blog/detail/ksmbd-a-new-in-kernel-smb-server dated 2021.11.03 It mentions stuff which confuses me: It is not meant to replace t...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.15

Yes, thank you. Especially for these 2 bits, as I would not have known otherwise. One of the things with the NTFS3 driver is that it does not support full journaling on the NTFS file system Power off/crashing just once while writing will likely corrupt the disk Do you reckon NTFS3 full journaling ma...

It's possible the update switches to a version of Samba which by default disables older versions of the SMB protocol for greater security.
Did you mean smb 1, or perhaps it swaps to use the new version in the kernel in bullseye (or something like that) ?

OK.
I assume "New Partition UUIDs box" somehow fixes everything under the covers.

Re: latest "how to" create (and boot from) a USB3 stick on a Pi4 8Gb ?

Ah, I just saw Will the RPi out of the box, just boot from USB if no Micro SD is detected? It depends - have you written a suitable O.S. to the SSD etc.? TBH, I'd start with making sure you can create/write a Raspberry PIOS bootable uSD card first, use that to check that the USB-to-SATA works (as a ...

Re: Problem making bootable USB copy

I have Pi 4 that I got recently, and used the imager to create a bootable microSD. After initial setup, I followed the instructions for using the "SD Card Copier" to copy the microSD to a USB of the same size (32 GB). After halting the system, I removed the microSD, and it booted fine fro...

latest "how to" create (and boot from) a USB3 stick on a Pi4 8Gb ?

Hello. I seem to have lost a post somehow, it looks to have disappeared. Oh well, try again and hope for the best. I have a Pi4 8Gb which I would like to boot directly from a USB3 stick without an SD card. Equipment: a Pi4 8Gb, a sandisk ultra 32Gb USB3 stick, an SD card, (and a couple of USB3 drive...

Hello. I see per the thread above viewtopic.php?p=1942599#p1942599 that a future kernel update will bring a new NTFS3 and SMB_SERVER as a part of new kernel 5.15 ... just a heads up and thanks for the doco.

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.15 and the new NTFS3 and SMB_SERVER

I am interested in using the new Raspberry Pi OS kernel with the new NTFS3 and SMB_SERVER, however I am unsure when kernel 5.15(+) may make it into "stable" for lesser IQ punters like me to use. Any advice, or even guesses based on history, would be appreciated as I'm currently seated look...

Re: Unable to make raspberry pi publicly accessible

Also, have you done something like at least created a DMZ on your home router for the Pi to live in (that's not secure either, home routers are famous for bugs/holes) ? Don't do that. Putting a Pi (or any other computer for that matter) into your router's DMZ exposes every port on that device to th...

Re: Unable to make raspberry pi publicly accessible

Perhaps Checked your apache logs on the pi ? Please consider re-thinking your need - unless you really know how to secure both your Pi and Apache with all of the right settings and in your LAN, then expect to be done over since you have created an entry point in your home LAN. Also, have you done so...
