Re: nhow do I start the gui window from the terminal

I must have messed up something when I set up my Pi. After my initial boot I get the prompt pi@RPi3 ~$ when I then enter startx Iget a pause followed by some feedback lines and the prompt returns. No gui Cut'n'paste in the "feedback lines" you're getting. Use code tags. when I try sudo st...

Re: nhow do I start the gui window from the terminal

startx should always work from a boot to command line. These days only if you're logged in on the physical console. Though that's likely to apply to most users doing this on Pi. With the default security and software, startx will fail if executed from rc.local, cron, a systemd service, over a seria...

Re: Cannot automount smb:// shared folder.

Routers generally have static (i.e. fixed) IP addresses. If you find its IP address once you should be able to use that forever. Baring replacing the router that is. The router has a static IP. The attached USB drive is assigned a different IP and I'm not sure it is assigned the same IP after reboo...

Re: Cannot automount smb:// shared folder.

Odd. That suggests that name resolution on your box is broken in some way. I'm not sure whethr name resolution in a mount command uses netbios or DNS. What you're reporting suggests that it tries DNS but that your server doesn't register with your local DNS server. Are you able to set a static IP ad...

Hi guys, Noob here...I have added a raspivid cmd to the boot using crontab, now whenever I start the raspberry pi it runs the raspivid full screen but doesn't allow me to exit out of the command? Re: SD Cards Keep Corrupting

If I understand correctly, there are four common factors in what you're seeing but you've only tested two of them Same/different SD card. Same/different Pi Same/different software Same/different user (i.e. you) You appear to have ruled out the first two so the problem must be in the second two. Thou...

Re: RPi Zero 2 W - unable to configure headless access through USB via SSH on W10

@thagrol W10 in the topic stands for Windows 10. It's not some linux distribution. I found this before and it did not help me. If only you had mentioned that... If it would work on Windows if I'd configured it on linux (I have dualboot for Ubuntu) then I'd gladly do so. The overall steps are the sa...

NTFS has accesscontrol features. But I dont know how to query them and/or change them.
I think those are on the file/directory level not the whole drive level. There is certainly nothing in the man pages for mount and mount.ntfs-3g on thiat.

Re: Disable Harddisk Authentication

We still don't have enough information to do anything other than guess. So here's mine: You have an entry in /etc/fstab for the NVMe drive The first time you boot the mount fails and the OS drops to recovery mode prompting for the root password (by default there isn't one) After the reboot (exactly ...

What, exactly, is "crappy" about PARTUUID?
I doubt we'll get an answeer to that. I suspect "crappy" == "I don't understand it and don't want to."

Re: ssh pi@raspberrypi fails with "host does not exist"

1. Does your nginx buildl have its equivalent to bonjour installed? Don't ask me how to check, it's not an OS I use. 2. IIRC ipconfig -all on a windows box only reports the IP addresses for the interfaces of that windows box. Attempting to ssh to one of those won't work unless you're running an ssh ...

Re: Pi 400 not booting when USB 3 SSD connected

Ok, I figured it out. I just changed the crappy PARTUUID identifiers to /dev identifiers. I edited my /boot/cmdline.txt root directive to root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 and in fstab I used /dev/mmcblk0p1 /boot /dev/mmcblk0p2 / /dev/sda1 /media/usb0 Not the best solution both in terms of security (I don't care...

My intent was to question the notion that people would willingly to put in 12-16 hour days for months on end without some expectation of reward. It can't be just charity! Sadly too many for profit companies in IT expect just that. To paraphrase many employment contracts I've had or seen: "We'r...
