One more question to the experts: what shows the Disassembly window in VSCode (OpenOCD) when looking at the flash region? Does it show the real flash data? (apparently not as the flash doesn't seem to be corrupted) Is it XIP cache or some mix of both? How reliable this information is?

Use Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P and execute the "CMake: Delete Cache and Reconfigure" command in VSCode.
Thank you, tttapa, this finally fixed the problem and I do not need my work around. Now, I can use the standard pico_sdk_import.cmake.

Re: VSCode-Windows-Pico-SDK-pico_w build

Yes, that is it.
As I said, you may also want to define WIFI_SSID and WIFI_PASSWORD so that the relevant examples are included in the build. If you don't do this, then things like the ntp_client example are excluded.

Good luck.
