Re: How is the keyboard quality on the RPi 400?

Thu Jul 29, 2021 4:23 am

My RPi 400 has a keybounce problem. It never misses a keypress, but often doubles the character.

So... instead of "My Raspberry Pi" I often get "Myy Raspberry Pii"

If I hit the keys with enthusiasm I get more keybounce. Less enthusiasm == less keybounce - but never NO keybounce.

Changing the keyboard preferences doesn't seem to make any difference.

I think Raspberry should have fitted the pi 400 keyboard with rubber keys don't you think? I think that would have improved the typing experience and also made the 400 a little more retro at the same time.

I've had my review unit for a few months now, to ensure I give a fair and honest assessment of it. To be honest, I've had a USB or BT keyboard connected to it for the entire duration - it's almost comically tragic that the very selling point, and whole point of the 400, comes across as all but an afterthought. Yes, my review unit was free to me, but no, I am not in any sense obliged to talk up a product which I feel leaves a great deal to be desired in a few areas. I feel responsible to be honest, and not encourage people to buy inferior products, of which this is one - my conscience will not permit me to lie, or say it is "good enough", it clearly isn't, and not just for a handful. If the foundation are balanced of mind, which I am sure they are, they will (and am sure, have) admit this in good grace, take it on the chin, and I am certain they'll use this lesson for further iterations.

If you wanted a more blunt, direct opinion, I am afraid I shall be "banned" again for voicing it, the reasons for such sensitivity are unknown, and in case that transpires, or this post be deleted, I am screenshotting and archiving this post, right now, after having submitted it.

Keyboard is OK for a casual user, it's not the best, but at the price (of the whole computer) is good enough - I can put up with it. ;)

I'm guessing, so can others.... 8-)

I am not payed for that, but use Pi400 keyboard "as keyboard" for Intel laptop (folded, running vertical in background) using a fork of Gadgetioids "Raspberry Pi 400 as a USB HID Keyboard" gist. I prefer the Pi400 keyboard over Thinkpad keyboard:
viewtopic.php?f=140&t=295074&p=1902127& ... d#p1884232

I use fork because I can build that myself, just for trust and making sure that keyboard characters are only sent via USB and not "phoned home" somewhere else:
https://gist.github.com/Hermann-SW/19c7 ... c-L85-L102

With HDMI switch I use Pi400 keyboard, trackball connected to Pi400 and HDMI monitor for either Pi400 or laptop.

Perfect would be if that gadget would transfer mouse or trackball events as HID over USB in addition. I created a workaround for that, trackball events travel over netcat session to laptop, so trackball and/or mouse connected to Pi400 can be used for working with laptop as well as with Pi400:

(strange to see white Pi400 power cable disconnected -- in gadget mode the whole Pi400 is powered from laptop USB3)

Mine has actually improved with use. My Capslock key is now reliably working. It was basically unusable when I got it. Must have been something logged under it that finally came free?

after finding myself making too many typos on the 400, i ended up pairing a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to it (thanks to this forum I was able to downgrade bluez and get bluetooth working) and haven't looked back since. the mechanical experience is hard to beat. I wish there were other alternatives for the keyboard as the overall performance of the pi400 is good with the giant heatsink.

I have a RPi 400 with Swedish keyboard. The keyboard is 100% ok in terms of accurate keystrokes, but i must say the feeling when i type on it is not that great.
But i am glad it works at least after reading here the many RPI400 users reporting problems with keystrokes, keys not working etc.

So much more have no issues and don't report that everything is good, I think Jamesh stated >100K sold Pi400. That means all that reported here are a small minority,

I am running Pi400 as gadget since months, my fork is buildable ...
https://gist.github.com/Hermann-SW/19c7 ... 89de2b0a60

... and easy to verify that keystrokes only go over USB to laptop:
https://gist.github.com/Hermann-SW/19c7 ... c-L85-L102

I use only the Pi400 keyboard, when I am working on the Pi400, as well as when working on Intel laptop ("laptop" alias makes Pi400 keystrokes go to Intel laptop, pressing CTRL+Raspberry make Pi400 keyboard usable for Pi400). I would not do so if using Pi400 keyboard would be pain.

P.S:
This is my current work from home setup, with HDMI switch for sharing HDMI display between Pi400 and Intel laptop:
