RPi Zero won't display anything

Sun Sep 12, 2021 10:10 pm

I got a Raspberry Pi Zero W, and I put the wires of a battery from a random broken game controller onto the GPIO pins for the 5v and ground, to see if it would work. Now whenever I turn the Zero on when hooked up to the ac adapter and HDMI cable, the light on the board is a solid green with no blinking, and my monitor says No Signal. I've tried different power and video cables to no avail. Help

That was unwise. Did the "battery from a random broken game controller" output more than 5v? If it did you may very well have damaged your Pi. IIRC the single LED on a zero/zeroW goes off to indicate SD card activity. That yours stays on may be a further indicator of a damaged Pi.

Was the reported behaviour with or without an SD card inserted?
If with, did you correctly write an OS image to it?

Assuming you have aceesss to a PC (another Pi will work) try the following:
  1. Disconnect everything from the zeroW
  2. Remove the SD card
  3. Find a normal charge and sync USB A to micro B cable (the sort used to sync a phone to a PC).
  4. Connect the micro B end to the USB port on the zeroW nearest the mini HDMI port. Do not use an OTG adapter
  5. Connect the other end of your cable to your PC
  6. Wait about a minute, more if the PC is particularly slow.
  7. Get a list of the attached USB device on the PC (linux: open a treminal window and run lsusb, Windows: look in device manager).
  8. If you don't see a "Broadcom Corp."device (linux) or a "BCM2708 Boot" device (Windows) It's highly likely the zeroW is beyond recovery and should be replaced.
I've no idea what MacOS calls it (don't have a Mac). On Windows 10 if it's not immediately visible, try expanding "Universal Serial Bus devices", this may work on earlier version of windows too.

I see the BCM2708 in my Device Manager on Windows 10.

So there is at least some life in it.

Try a different, know good HDMI cable and a fresh OS installation.

Then work through this: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151

No signal. Different HDMI and a fresh install of Pi OS. Nothing. Seems to be a discharge problem. Did I fry the board?

if that is showing up, then the cpu is still alive

next thing i would try, is to create a ssh.txt on the fat32 boot partition, and try booting it
after maybe 5-10minutes, turn it off, and check the card
is the file still there?

it should be deleted automatically on bootup, so if its gone, then things are booting, and its just an hdmi problem
if its still there, its not booting linux, and more things will need to be tried

Does there have to be any specific code or text in the ssh.txt?

nope, it can just be an empty file, the name itself is the code

I plugged the power supply into the Zero's power port after I put the ssh.txt file in there. Green led was still on with no blinking or anything. After 10 minutes I took the sd card out and the file was still there.

Same one. I doubt it's the sd card since I can view the files on it just fine.

then linux isnt booting all of the way

oh, what if you plug it into a pc, with the data port, WHILE the sd card is in there (do what thagrol said earlier, but skip step 2)

does it still show up as a usb device?

then the maskrom simply isnt seeing the bootcode.bin file, and is acting like you never put a card into it

something must be damaged with the sd card slot, or traces

but you can still boot it!

https://github.com/raspberrypi/usbboot/

if you compile usbboot, and plug the pi0 into a computer, and then run "rpiboot -d d:\", pointing to the fat32 partition of the sd card (or a directory with a copy of it)
then the pi0 should partially boot up
it will fail to mount the rootfs, but that will at least get far enough to enable video i believe, which will confirm the hdmi works

as for the sd card issues, can you post a photo of the top of the pi0 board, with the card removed?

How do you compile the stuff at the GitHub link? I'm used to Windows where everything is just an exe or a zip file.

How did you image your SD card with Pi OS?

You might want to try this instead: https://bennuttall.com/raspberry-pi-zero-gpio-expander/ Then if that works and your feeling ambitious this: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=316528

Sorry but I'm unable to do that. Perhaps one already exists (hint: try a web seaerch)

OK. I'll use the first link Thagrol posted when I can. I also installed Ubuntu on my PC but I never use it. Still, with it I can use that link.
