Raspberry Pi Zero DOA?

Thu Dec 10, 2015 1:44 pm

So I think I have a completely DOA RPi Zero. I have tried everything including:

different cables
different power sources
different SD cards

I have tried images I created with the image utility recommended on the website as well as a Noobs installation. These images boot fine when I try them on my other Rpi's but not on the Zero.

Any suggestions, steps I'm missing? Or is this one just a dead unit?

Does the LED flash 8 times then repeat? If yes, whatever you are putting on the card is too old. Download afresh from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads

I'm in the same boat. Vendor would only let me order one and its DOA. :(

To eliminate SD card issues etc, remove all HDMI & power cables, take out the uSD card from the slot, just a bare Zero.

Now take a normal micro-USB to USB-A cable (def no OTG cables anywhere), plug the big USB-A into your PC, the micro-USB into your Zero's USB connector (not the PWR_IN). On your Windows PC (if it's alive) it will appear in device manager as "boot 2708", on linux you'll see dmesg references to the same. If you don't see that then it's a duff Zero.

My experience shows that, unlike other Pi models, if the SD card is not inserted and correctly seated there is no light on.
It's worth a check.
