Updated to the latest kernel / firmware today (20200210), pi4 does not boot. Wiped sdcard, flashed the 2019-09 release and everything works. Did apt full-upgrade and the pi4 does not boot again. There's some serious issue with the latest update. I am not using any USB device.
i have the same exact issue..can't boot anymore after update..tried with different sd cards..with fresh install 20200205 from official site everything worked fine..then i updated with sudo apt update and sudo apt full-upgrade..reboot..after that pi4 doesn't boot anymore...on screen it says plla: couldn't lock pll...with my old pre 20200210 update sd card, everything work fine...what could be the problem? Any thoughts?
On the 20200205 , if you do sudo reboot, does the system come back? Since 20200205, whenever I do sudo reboot, I have to remove the power cord to make it boot.
i have noticed the same issue..but sometimes it reboot, sometime does not..with 20200210 update, won't boot at all

Ok, same issue. I am just going to stay in 2019-09, lol driving me nuts. Power saving features are good, but not when it renders the device unusable.

well its frustrating..after every update, there are some new issues..i guess they will fix this one soon, cos you are right, it is unusable

I am shocked that this even passed testing and QA. We are talking vanilla raspbian with nothing in it. I am using the lite version and this happens.

Same here. This ruined my weekend. Haha. A remote developer ran a script that he didn't realize included apt update and apt upgrade, and left 6 devices completely unable to boot. These devices were all in remote locations, so we had to walk people through formatting sd cards, installing raspbian, installing remote access software, and then reinstalling all of our software on the PIs, and finally re-testing them.

I'm having the same problem. Downloaded and installed 20200205 and it ran fine. ran sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade, and now I get the following message:
[ 0.530840] bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla: couldn't lock PLL
[ 0.631843] bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla: couldn't lock PLL
[ 0.735166] bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla: couldn't lock PLL
[ 0.835890] bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla: couldn't lock PLL

if I reformat my ~sd card with the new iso, it'll work again, but only until I do a sudo apt upgrade... :o

We know about this, should be fixed if you do another apt update.

Nope, that update seems to have fixed it in some cases and broken it in others. To be investigated tomorrow.

Updated from the previous release to the latest and got the couldn't lock PLL error on reboot. I decided to wipe another microsd card and put the latest raspian image with desktop and with recommended images, both booted up fine but after updating and clicking reboot, I get the same couldn't lock PLL error four times.

Tried the previous release too, works fine but as soon as it auto updates and wants to reboot, it again shows the same couldn't lock PLL error.

I've tried several different approaches to avoid this issue but none of them worked. I wouldn't recommend anyone update their current working raspian installs to the latest versions or anyone attempting to do a clean install unless you can avoid auto updating. It kills it every time.

Hey all, brand new here and new to the Pi world but I come with a little linux experience

I got the same "couldn't lock PLL" error without being able to boot. I didn't bother to back up because I never thought a kernel update would wreck a system so bad in the stable channel...

I appreciate what the developers do, but it's been more than 24 hours now (I think) since the broken kernel was released, and it is STILL available. They haven't pulled it from the repository or sent out a warning of some kind. At this point, I'm more concerned about their policies in handling or working around these types of disasters, let alone preventing them from happening.

If your Pi 4 build is mission-critical and you haven't reformatted the card yet, don't give up yet. For our Pi 4, we depend on it too much daily for starting fresh to be a viable option and there was a lot of work in the setup. It took me a long time, but I have managed to downgrade the kernel properly, restoring our build exactly as it was. The absence of a recovery mode of any kind made it difficult, but I think it's possible in any setup. This assumes that you are able to get your hands on the device since it completely fails to boot, having another computer and SD card or USB flash drive, wired internet connection, and previously able to connect to it headless with either SSH or VNC. Small guide to come soon, but right now I'm going to bed.

Currently we can't reproduce the PLL issue. Can anyone with the PLL issue try:
Add over_voltage=1 to config.txt. If that fails try with 2.
Could you download start4.elf and fixup4.dat and replace the ones on boot partition of scard?
If that fixes it then could you confirm if start4.elf and fixup4.dat causes it to break again?
That might help narrow the issue down.

I'm not home so I can't verify any of this, but does your testbed have the latest firmware update? Maybe that's why you can't reproduce the error? Try going to a new Pi without the firmware update?

Also, I am on my raspbian lite, I don't think I have heard any issues regarding the desktop issue, maybe I am wrong.

If you have a mission critical Pi, then you should ALWAYS back it up before doing any sort of upgrade. TBH, for mission critical you should be backing up daily whether upgrading or not. This is standard operating practice for any sort of device, not just Raspberry Pi, that is used in critical scenarios.

That said, we are trying to find the cause of this issue ASAP. It's obviously not seen by everyone as we didn't see it in our testing.

the start4.elf booted to a black screen
(winner)the fixup4.dat booted all the way to the desktop.

important to know: this is on my raspbian lite + gnome-core build, it's the only other sdcard i have that got the pll no boot issue.

i fully updated & rebooted several times, looking good so far.

You should update both start4.elf/fixup4.dat together. I assume you updated the first pair and that fixed it?
Can you update the second pair and confirm if that makes the problem reoccur?

i added them 1 at a time.
the start4.elf, which booted to blank, so i put original back
then the fixup4.dat, which got me back up & running, that i'm using right now.

be right back, i'll try it now.

alright this pair got stuck at startup.
If that fixes it then could you confirm if start4.elf and fixup4.dat causes it to break again?
this pair i'm using now booted just fine.
Could you download start4.elf and fixup4.dat and replace the ones on boot partition of scard?
hope that helps.

@kerry_s

Can you just clarify:
Did the first pair of files when updated together (start4.elf/fixup4.dat) work correctly?
Did the second pair of files when updated together (start4.elf/fixup4.dat) work correctly?

the fist pair worked

the second pair froze at startup, had to turn off via switch, pull the sdcard, copy the first pair back to boot up again.

worked, i'm using now.

Code: Select all

Did the first pair of files when updated together (start4.elf/fixup4.dat) work correctly?
did not even boot, froze at multi colored screen. hard power off needed.

Code: Select all

Did the second pair of files when updated together (start4.elf/fixup4.dat) work correctly?

over_voltage=1 && fixup4.dat && start4.elf solved the PLL hang for me, too.

The second fixup4.dat and second start4.elf hung my RPi4 again, as did removing the over_voltage=1 from /boot/config.txt

overlay=1 && first fixup4.dat+start4.elf solved the PLL hang for me.

The second fixup4.dat+start4.elf hang my RPi4.

No overlay=1 line in config.txt also hangs my RPI4.
