Problem with full screen videos in chromium and disabled compositor

Fri May 08, 2020 11:10 pm

I read on vPetkov's blog that disabling xcompmgr composition manager via raspi-config > Advanced > Compositor > No or

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/xdg/autostart/xcompmgr.desktop
can improve screen tearing in chromium full screen videos.

For me it causes full screen videos to appear as this. If I right click and bring up a context menu over the video, the video becomes perfect and silky smooth. Only problem is that I have to keep the context menu open over the video, blocking a big chunk of the screen, to avoid the weird image distortion.

This problem only happens with official raspbian chromium-browser 78.0.3904.108-rpt1. If I use the other official chromium/stable 80.0.3987.162-1~deb10u1 armhf, full screen video works and there is no video tearing with and without xcompmgr composition. Unfortunately with that version I am not able to get Widevine working properly with vPetkov's workaround.

Code: Select all

$ apt search chromium --names-only
chromium/stable 80.0.3987.162-1~deb10u1 armhf
  web browser

chromium-browser/testing,now 78.0.3904.108-rpt1 armhf [installed]
Chromium web browser, open-source version of Chrome

Fixed the issue, problem was with my unstable kernel. Rolled back to stable and all fixed.

Also tried using compton on 5.4.35-v7l+ and it caused the same problem but everywhere in the system.

Moral of the story: expect bugs in testing kernels

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install --reinstall raspberrypi-bootloader raspberrypi-kernel
Linux raspberrypi 4.19.97-v7l+ #1294 SMP Thu Jan 30 13:21:14 GMT 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux

After installing new kernal 5.4.47 there is a problem watching anything in full screen mode..i've got screen like yours..goes full blur and normal picture is gone..to be able to watch anything in full screen i needed to enable compositor in raspi-config, but then tearing started to show again…windowed mode works with new kernal also with heavy tearing..dunno how to fix it , but i’m sure it is kernal related..when i reverted to old 4.19.118 everything works fine..any thoughts?
