WIFI not working with Buster but OK with Jessie

Sat May 16, 2020 7:07 am

Hello

I am able to configure wifi with Jessie on Pi Zero issuing the following instructions from the command line:-

Code: Select all

sudo su
wpa_passphrase "SSID" "PASSWORD" >> /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
wpa_cli reconfigure

This doesn't work for Buster however so I am wondering what has changed and how I can get wifi working on Buster?

Thanks!

have you tried the "sudo raspi-config" method?
if i had to guess as to why it don't work, is because you need to set the country code for wifi.

Just a possibility:
If your passphrase is too short or long , instead of obfuscating the passphrase it produces an error message:
wpa_passphrase "myssid" "foo,bar"
Passphrase must be 8..63 characters

But the error is sent to STDOUT not STDERR so it's written to your wpa_supplicant.conf file not displayed on the terminal. This is a bug.

Yup, this ^ (you also need a country code, which raspi-config will do for you).

I have a pre-configured wpa_supplicant.conf file I copy to new cards.

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=GB

network={
	ssid="WiFi SSID"
	psk="WPA/WPA2 passphrase"
}
Edit country=, ssid= and psk= with your information and save the file.

You can place the pre-configured wpa_supplicant.conf file in the small FAT32 "boot" partition of a Raspbian imaged card (along with the ssh file). Raspbian will move it to its correct location and use it to connect to your wireless network.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups, and where is that annoying music coming from?

@kerry_s - I get an error message 'could not communicate with wpa_supplicant' when trying to change country code using "sudo raspi-config"

@jbudd - My password is 8 characters

@HawaiianPi - I have a boot partition and a rootfs partition. Is it one of these?

Yes, the boot partition is the one I was referring to.

The partition labelled "boot" is formatted with the FAT32 file system and accessible from Windows or Mac OS computers, so you can add and edit files there. When Raspbian finds a wpa_supplicant.conf file there it will be moved to its correct location and used to connect to your network.

@HawaiianPi

Ok so I created a new card of the full Raspbian using Pi Disc imager

I created the wpa_supplicant.conf file using nano on mint and copied it to the boot directory

I checked that it had been copied to the correct place after boot which it has.

I still have no connection.

Using ifconfig the wireless adapter appears to be recognised but when go to raspi-config and try to connect that way or set localisation options I get 'cannot communicate with wpa_supplicant'

You don't copy it to the boot directory, you copy it to the boot partition (first partition on a Raspbian imaged card).

yes sorry that's what I meant. anyway as I said I checked after boot and /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf had been updated with the correct details

I finally got this working.

Started from scratch with fresh install of Buster. Configured the wpa_supplicant.conf as described above and installed the relevant WiFi driver from here - http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi ... u-drivers/

Thanks all for help!
