RPi4 freezes after last (today) update [solved]

Thu May 28, 2020 11:01 pm

I have three RPi4 4 Gb and the latest Raspbian image on all of them, two on SD cards and one on SSD and after today upgrade i have random freezes and black screen on all of them, especially when watching Youtube in Chromium..before the last update, everything was perfect..anyone else with this issue? I'm still using old or last official kernal 4.19.118-v7l+ , no OC on all three Pi's.

I'm getting the same, black screen, unresponsive when trying to play youtube video's in Chromium after the latest update. youtube in Firefox works fine. This is on a RaspberryPi 4 2GB.

That's exactly what is happening to all of my 3 Pi's...definitely related with video playback after last upgrade..black screen,unresponsive and freezing.

Can you right click on the YouTube and get the stats to make sure it's h264 not vp8?

Can you give a url that definitely shows the problem?
What is hdmi resolution. Are you watching in default window size or switched to fullscreen?

Is this is with default config.txt (e.g. no overclock)?

Roughly how long do I need to watch for before seeing an issue? (e.g. seconds/minutes/hours)

Mine seems to be broken as well... I can't see any good video from youtube

Only way to watch it is to disable h264ify and let it play is VP9

H264, cant find a link that makes it do it consistently. i have reinstalled 3 times to try to remedy this. with or without overclock. sometimes happens just as a video loads. sometimes after watching for several minutes and through several videos. also has happened after leaving a video pauses for several minutes and then hitting play caused it to go black. again i can not make it happen. i dont general watch videos in fullscreen on this pi so im not sure about that.

not sure if its the cause, but seemed to start after going to usb-msd boot.

Hi!

I believe it is the same issue reported in these threads:

viewtopic.php?f=66&t=275414

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=275640

I confirm the issue and would like to add that my wifi is much less stable after the upgrade. As everyone said, it is a complete system freeze.
With a raspbian image around 2 weeks older everything is fine. I also made a point about the issue in the USB boot thread -- I believe there is something related to the recents upgrades of rpi-eeprom.

Best and take care!

There is no specific situation that i can recreate, it's random..when watching YT or some other video..VLC, Live TV in Chromium etc..it happens sometimes after few minutes, sometimes after few seconds..screen go black and system unresponsive no matter if it's in full screen or windowed..as i've said, i have 3 RPi4 all with different resolution and not OC..2 are on full HD and one is on 720p, all three attached on different screens..the only thing that is the same for all of 3 is the latest Raspbian i've upgraded 2 days ago..before upgrade everything was ok

Update: i've tried disabling h264 and watching with vp9 enabled, result is the same..Live TV in Chromium after few seconds screen goes black..needed to pull power cable off..i think this is definitely Chromium related,cos i cant't even acces Chromium settings page without Aw,Snap! warning...Firefox works ok so far..

Find out one video from YT that will definitely force system to go black and freeze Pi.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDGL4T1vnxA

It's a chromium addon. Click on its icon (h) in top right of chromium window and uncheck "Enable h264ify"

So far i have been able to play a couple of youtube videos without the pi locking up after disabeling the h264ify extension. Thanks for the tip.

I've also been having this issue. It seems like downgrading the raspberrypi-bootloader (aka VideoCore firmware) package to this (http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/p ... _armhf.deb) alone resolves the issue for me.

Can those people seeing the issue provide a little more information please. For example, the resolution of the display you are using, anything unusual about your setup etc. Full screen, windowed. What board revision are you using (cat /proc/cpuinfo), that sort of thing. Are you using new installs or upgraded systems etc. Anything that can give us a hint as to the combination that causes the issue.

The display I'm using is 1920x1080 (60Hz) and it's connected via a few adapters (Micro HDMI -> HDMI -> DVI). I don't have any displays with a native HDMI input. I've only seen it happen in windowed mode, but I haven't watched many videos in fullscreen lately. This is an upgraded install (original image was downloaded in late March).

Last few lines of /proc/cpuinfo (serial is removed because I'm paranoid):

Code: Select all

Hardware	: BCM2835
Revision	: c03112
Serial		:
Model		: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.2
config.txt is left at default except the following changes:

Code: Select all

disable_overscan=1

# resolution autodetect fails (likely due to the chain of adapters I'm using), so I have to force it
[HDMI:0]
hdmi_drive=1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=82
EDIT: I also uninstalled xcompmgr last month (after which 1080p youtube playback was a lot smoother)

The issue occurred to me after the update came out and after that i tried a clean install with the new image but stil the problem exists. The video playback issue happens when windowed and fullscreen in Chromium. The screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 and the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB is connected with Micro HDMI -> HDMI.

Running a fully updated 2020-02-13-raspbian-buster on a 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.2
Using the legacy driver and one HD monitor @ 1920x1080x60Hz
All running off a 32GB sdcard

The bootloader is stock, I have no fancy applications other than the ones that came in the image and subsequent upgrades.

I did apt-get full-upgrade yesterday (Friday) morning, and since then I have suffered a series of crashes.
The screen goes black, and no logging occurs until after I pull the plug and replace it.
It seems to be when I click an embedded youtube video in chromium.
The most recent occurrence was an embedded video in https://hackaday.com/2020/05/29/creatin ... -learning/, the debug info is :-

I have since watched the video with no issues, so I don't think it is the fault of youtube.

The LEDs on the network jack continue to flicker and flash, but the Raspberry Pi does not respond to pings from other machines on the network and is completely unresponsive.

It is set up to log to a remote syslog machine, but nothing appears in these logs once the screen goes black.
This has never happened in the past, it is due to some change that occurred when I upgraded yesterday morning.

I usually apt-get upgrade about once a week

I had claws-mail, chromium, rdesktop and vlc open at the time of the last crash, and probably a PCManFM window or two.

It doesn't crash every time, and I can't force it to crash by following some sequence of clicking or typing.

I wish I could tell you more, but there is no more to tell.
