RPI 3B & Novatel 551l USB LTE

Wed Mar 03, 2021 10:08 pm

I'm hoping someone more familiar with troubleshooting LTE modems can help me. I'm trying to add a Novatel USB551L to my RPI 3B. I'm running a clean install of the latest version of Raspbian OS and from everything I've read says the new version and Kernels should work pretty well with it as plug and play. I've read a few tutorials where people have used this device with their raspberry pi with no issues but most are pretty well dated. The only thing I've added is Network Manager which recognizes the device immediately. I also followed this tutorial to see if the added settings help but no change.

http://blog.fphi.us/2017/09/cellular-mo ... i.html?m=1

My issue is the device works and connects briefly but then disconnects. It ends up going through a constant cycle of connecting for a few seconds and then disconnecting. I've read this could be a possible power issue; however, I'm using the RPI 2.5A power supply with no other usb devices connected. Also in reviewing the logs, the USB doesnt appear to be disconnecting. It looks like the modem is just disconnecting and reconnecting but I havent been able to figure out why. During the few seconds its connected I am able to get on the internet so everything would work great if it would just stay connected.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Here are the relevant logs:

I was about to call this project a failure and go back to my previous wifi hotspot when I decided to try one last change. Since the tutorial I posted above said they made it work flawlessly with Raspbian Stretch, I downloaded that version of the OS and loaded it. I reconfigured everything else the same as before and voila it worked. I honestly don't understand why the new OS isn't compatible but all I can imagine is it has something to do with the Kernel change. Either way it's working fine now.
