No you don't need to build the kernel if you have matching linux-headers. I just did it like this:
I got the driver source from https://github.com/porjo/mt7601.git - it looks like there are some additional driver fixes not present in mediatek source

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/porjo/mt7601.git
Then I got matching linux-headers from http://www.niksula.hut.fi/~mhiienka/Rpi ... aders-rpi/ (many thanks for this, these should really be part of raspibian for every kernel but for some reason they are not!)

Code: Select all

wget http://www.niksula.hut.fi/~mhiienka/Rpi/linux-headers-rpi/linux-headers-3.12.35%2b_3.12.35%2b-2_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.12.35+_3.12.35+-2_armhf.deb
then it told me it needs gcc-4.7 so I installed it

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 cpp-4.7
then I could finally compile the driver

Code: Select all

cd mt7601/src/
sudo make
sudo make install
Then I applied udev name fix to have network interface to be named wlan0 instead of ra0

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/95-ralink.rules
and entered

Code: Select all

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="ra*", NAME="wlan0"
then I plugged in the dongle and it just worked like my other one I used previously :-)

wilferraciolli, fanoush, symlink to sources should be created automatically if you install kernel headers from official package (not from external repo).
Moreover, I'd avoid installing packages from unknown repos like niksula.hut.fi because of security concerns.

and which package exactly it is? I did not find one matching current kernel. apt-get install linux-headers suggested only very old ones (for kernels 3.2, 3.6, 3.10) nothing for 3.12.35+ or even only 3.12.

Thanks a lot alfonder, for taking time to build these drivers. Much appreciated. I am able to set up my router with ease.

Hello, can anybody compile for me these drivers for MT7601 for the latest kernel 3.17.7? (I'm using OpenELEC).

I've read so many posts on this subject, I cannot remember exactly how I came across this one, it's in German, but the code is very easy to copy & paste.

It worked a treat on my Rpi B+. Many thanks to Thomas Wenzlaff for documenting it!

@onetelcomms, I did all what you have said and process smoothly, but after I plugged the dongle on pi, I can't still use wifi to connect the Internet, is there anything I've missed or what should I do to make sure that what I did is on the right way, thank you for your help!

Hi everybody,

I also bought one of these wifi usb and I can't succeed in the compilation of the MT7601U driver. (I run into 3.18.3+ and as far as i can see, nobody made these working for this version)

Here are serveral steps that i follow with no success:

lsusb give me this output:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter
I downloaded the lastest kernel release on github and extracted it:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/rpi-3.18.y.tar.gz

made these instructions into rpi-linux-3.18 folder with no errors

Code: Select all

make mrproper
zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
cp .config .config.org
sed -i 's/^CONFIG_CROSS_COMPILE.*/CONFIG_CROSS_COMPILE=""/' .config
make modules_prepare
wget https://raw.github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/master/extra/Module.symvers
then I got the MTU7601U driver from MediaTek (file : DPO_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.4_20130913.tar.bz2 )

extracted it then proceed to make && make install.
In my first attempts i couldn't run correctly make because of an error with a struct in the rt_linux.h

Code: Select all

error: incompatible types when assigning to type ‘int’ from type ‘kuid_t’
error: incompatible types when assigning to type ‘int’ from type ‘kgid_t’
so i made a patch in this file by replacing int by kuid_t and kgid_t respectively (maybe the driver doesn't work cause of it ?)

Then i make && make install once again and (with lot of warnings) the driver compiled.

I installed by run:

Code: Select all

sudo insmod /lib/modules/3.18.3/kernel/drivers/net//wireless/mt7601Usta.ko
And reboot my rpi.. But when i plug my usb wifi dongle i get this error:

Code: Select all

Anyone know how to compile this driver for my version or know what have I done wrong (or maybe have the driver ready-to :P) ?

P.S: Sorry for my bad english.

Im on kernel 3.18.4+ had the same problem with compiling..

Then i used the modified source from https://github.com/porjo/mt7601.git

This compiled ok but i when i try to load the driver i get:

Eventually, I'm back from those soooo long New Year holidays :D . Now it's time to update.
Here is the driver for kernel 3.18.5+ #746.
How to install
Ssh to your RaspberryPi and enter the following commands (better copy-paste to avoid typos):

Code: Select all

cd /tmp
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67643651/mt7601_3.18.5_746.tar.gz
sudo tar xf mt7601_3.18.5_746.tar.gz -C /
sudo depmod 3.18.5+
sudo reboot

Glad to know it helped.
For those, who prefer to compile the driver by themselves, I can post the patch, which makes Ralink's driver 3.0.0.4 compatible with kernel 3.18+

I have tried to install the driver following the last post. No issue to report in the actual installation process, but it's not working.

Details on my Pi:

pi@raspberrypi ~ $ lsusb

The driver is not loading and I assume it is because it doesn't recognise the wifi module.

Looking at the mt7601 driver source codes I have the USB ID for your module is not included in any of them so is it included in the source you have and are you sure this is the right driver to use.

If it is the right driver and the USB ID is not included you could try adding the USB ID and re-compiling the driver. Looks like the file you need to edit is common/rtusb_dev_id.c.

I try all github mt7601u compile with https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/ar ... 8.y.tar.gz

after make && sudo make install when run sudo modprobe mt7601Usta

I try to reboot but it fail, it just stuck in "loading kernel module snd-bcm2835"

Please help, how to make xiaomi wifi to support 3.18.5+ kernel?

Here is the driver for kernel 3.18.5+ #746.
How to install
Ssh to your RaspberryPi and enter the following commands (better copy-paste to avoid typos):

Code: Select all

cd /tmp
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67643651/mt7601_3.18.5_746.tar.gz
sudo tar xf mt7601_3.18.5_746.tar.gz -C /
sudo depmod 3.18.5+
sudo reboot
alfonder could you please make the driver for the latest update (3.18.5+ 748) available?

Any chance you can compile it for the a+ and pi 2
