There are a couple of things to learn here:

1. .desktop files
2. m3u playlists (or another playlist format supported by vlc)

Here's an example which I just put together and tested.

First, make a directory in /home/pi/.config/ called autostart

Code: Select all

mkdir /home/pi/.config/autostart
Next, we need to create a .desktop file with the vlc exec instructions, including the location of the playlist.

Code: Select all

nano /home/pi/.config/autostart/autovlc.desktop

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=vlc /home/pi/playlist.m3u
Then, we need to populate the playlist file with file locations. Here's the following for example, you'll obviously need to create the correct paths for your music collection.

Code: Select all

nano /home/pi/playlist.m3u

Code: Select all

/home/pi/music/faith-no-more/the-real-thing/01-from-out-of-nowhere.ogg
/home/pi/music/faith-no-more/the-real-thing/02-epic.ogg
/home/pi/music/faith-no-more/the-real-thing/03-falling-to-pieces.ogg
Restart the desktop and it should run :-)

Hope this helps!

There's a museum application for a Raspbery Pi here that also needs vlc to start at boot.

However it's to play a DVD stored on the SD card and it's too slow without video acceleration.

Does anyone have an accelerated version of vlc, preferably including DVD menu navigation?

There is no such thing available. XBMC has disabled dvdnav entirely,
and omxplayer only works with .vob files. We don't even know how to work
with CSS'ed disks.

Hi guys!
I've a little question about this way to auto-load VLC: in my Raspberry-pi this procedure don't work, it's probably because my system use autologin function provided with mingetty??? There is a way to make VLC able to autoload on startup an URL (audio streaming) with mingetty?!?
My goal is to automatically load my radio on startup, in order to have my raspberry-pi connected only to an amplifier to check if my radio is running, without needing keyboard, mouse and monitor. Manually everything work properly, but I want to automate the process.
I'm asking too much to my little raspberry? :)

Hi everyone! I've an update! actually, in my case, the auto-load-n-play script seems to work only in desktop enviroment, maybe this procedure was created to do so, but how can I achieve the same goal in the "command line enviroment", without typing "startx"?
Thank you!

Could this work if I want the raspberry pi to send a stream on the network. In my case I want to use the raspberry as a surveillance camera and watch the stream on a computer elsewhere.

Hi to all…

I want to automaticly start VLC at startup of my raspberry PI 3b+ but nothing I found on this forum seems to work for me.
I have installed the raspbian sofware with NOOBS ver 2.8.2 and the software works fine. Installed a Subtronics X5000 sound card and this one also works fine. Installed a 7 inch lcd screen and it also works fine. It is verry frustrating that nothing seems to work to get VLC to autostart at startup of my raspberry.

can someone help me with my problem ?
where to put script files to autostart vlc?

maybe I should look for a script-file on my Raspberry PI that is already working and ad a startup command for VLC ?

Hello Users, I am also looking for a way to delay the start of the M3U / VLC a bit because my Raspberry is faster than my IP camera.

thank you for your help
