UL CE Certified cases

Fri Aug 24, 2012 6:27 pm

I want to use the Raspberry PI in an industrial environment. To be-able to install this device in an industrial environment the Raspberry PI will need a case that is also UL CE Certified.
Will it have a case?
Not for the first batch. We’ll be making and selling cases by the summer; you’ll be able to buy a unit with or without a case, or a case on its own. The education release later in 2012 will have a case by default. There are lots of homebrew case discussions on the forum.

At this point I am considering creating a UL CE certified case. The certification process is expensive $20k to start if we get everything right the first time around.

My questions are;
  • Is there an existing UL CE certified case?
  • Will the official case from raspberrypi.org be UL CE certified case?

well i think you have found the point why you probably won't find such a case ($20k is a huge amount for not creating and selling any items yet, just a document that most people dont even need).

on the first question: I haven't found any case yet with this certification, however, some of the existing cases might fulfil the requirements of it (although having no document of it)
do you really need to have that document? if not, it's much easier to find/create a case that fulfils the requirements
on the second one: i have read before here on the forums, maybe from liz (however can't find sources for that, so handle with care) that the foundation is very happy with the way the case-universe evolved and has no intention to create a case yet (however that might change later). but as i stated i cant find sources, so might not be truth, but i remember reading something like that

anyway, i really wish you luck with this as it is something new here and might find some interest

Actually, I think you might be referring to this: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1640 which is of course from liz, but not the forums.

If you are going to put this box in to any industrial building permanently you are going to need a case that is CE certified.

Yep, Most cases will support this requirement, almost all acrylic cases would for sure. Its the documentation that is missing and is required for my projects.

Yep it sure sounds like they aren't planning on producing a case.
That's just too bad.
