Overlay on UV4L stream

Thu Sep 28, 2017 4:23 pm

I have followed the great instructions at and have my Rpi Streaming Audio and Video to another PC. My problem is that when I overlay text I see two extra overlay's: AND software by

Why do I have two overlays? How can I remove them?
I think I read somewhere this is because of the driver that the linux-project uses and there is an official one which works, but with no overlay - is this correct?

Geoffr98, did you get anywhere with this?

I used the contact form at, but I haven't received any reply.

Does anybody else know what the situation is? I'd like to use this for a project, but the watermark is kind of a deal-breaker.

I don't think it's a matter of simply changing an option in the config file. I read in a book "Raspberry Pi 2 Server Essentials" that you have to get a special unlock code from the developer, that's tied to your hardware serial number, and you can get a maximum of three in return for a donation. I don't know how accurate that is.

I wish was more straightforward about it. If it's a crippled/demo version of commercial software, why not just tell people that up front? It seems like the whole thing is set up to trick people into thinking its free, with the .org domain, demo videos with no watermarks, and no mention anywhere on the website about licence terms or the watermark. So people start using it and then find out they have to pay to remove the watermark, after they've already put a lot of effort into figuring it all out. That's my experience so far at least... am I right?

I never received any reply from after more than a week. I didn't find any way to remove the overlay.

By google I only found some links to other people who tried and gave up: ... watermark/ ... -watermark

It's a shame, UV4L can do a lot, and would make things much easier for me. I'd like to use it in some art installation projects I'm working on. But having the "software by" banner on the screen makes it completely useless for my purposes. Now I'm stuck trying to use Chromium with Node.js servers, but it's a struggle because I don't know much about it, and so far it doesn't work very well.

Even if I could get three free unlock codes, that's no good, I need something I can rely on and use in different projects. I don't mind paying something for it if I have to. I don't understand why they do it this way, put an advertising banner on it but then not answer their contacts.

Edit: I see now in the second link above, somebody just added this information:
Send a mail to asking them to remove the watermark stating the reason you are using for (project/thesis/commercial). They will ask you to mail the output of uv4l driver serial number provided you give credits in which you use it for.
Maybe I'll try to contact them again, but my project deadline is in a few days...
