I have 2 PCs with Debian Xfce on them and have no time or energy to learn a new OS.
I dislike Ubuntu (spying/tracking/dishonesty) very much.
A popular Linux Youtuber said an Ubuntu server was better for production on a Pi than is Raspberry Pi Lite and I believed him, so thought it followed that a Debian server would be better, too.
I want a Debian server for my brand-new Pi 4 8GB, but am having trouble SSH-ing into it as I don't have a password or user set up. I didn't order the microHDMI cords (or phone components), because all of the Raspbian videos made it seem so *easy* to have (and set up?) a headless server, but those videos showed Raspbian, not Debian for Pi.
I would like to try another day or two to set this up headless.
Tried: changing a few comments in /etc/sshd_config by adding root and another name to AddUsers, and changed a few security comments such as log in without a password and PermitRootLogin. Still unable to get past SSH without a password.
Seems there should be a way to add a few lines to a file or two (the way many of us did with wpa_supplicant), put the SD card back in the Pi and live happily ever after.
I put Termux on my phone and downloaded OpenSSL in hopes an answer would fall from the sky, but it didn't....even after plugging my phone into the Pi. I didn't look at file manager on phone, but am pretty sure that wouldn't matter as things are supposedly sandboxed on Android.

Hi,

You did not give much to help with: are you using wired or wireless; which Debian Server image are you using; etc.

However, since you are posting in the ARM64 beta I would suggest you get an SD and fire up:
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspios_lite_arm64/

it has the proprietary Broadcom crap baked in; is pretty bullet proof; dead simple to get running pi/raspberry; and should feel a lot like your Debian PC's or headless Debian server. A quick google should find you a recent youtuber setting up a headless RaspiOS lite. https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... s.html#ssh

Spend half an hour, install the stuff you think you might need and see it works.

You could even try the full 64 beta. https://wiki.lxde.org/en/Comparison_bet ... E_and_Xfce

Not that I know anything about Debian, but I would assume you have seen their raspi tested:
https://raspi.debian.net/faq/
The faq (3,4) seem to have something about connecting via SSH headless and using wireless (if you are trying to use wireless)... the home of raspi.debian.net should lead you to some more useful info about doing debian on rpi4.

Hope you find this a bit useful.

There are Debian Raspberry Pi images if thats what you're actually looking for.

https://wiki.debian.org/RaspberryPi4
https://raspi.debian.net/tested-images/

Please note that Debian do not Officially Support the Raspberry Pi SBC / 400 / CM

stick with the standard raspberry os, when you create your sd card with rpi-imager you can press ctrl+shift+x to get the advanced settings, there you can enter all your info, such as wifi, password,etc....

advanced settings only work for raspberry.
