You worry too much. That is a nice tidy beginners electronics desk.

This is the work bench of the late great electronics guru Jim Williams:

Create a different pile for each project so that the mess spreads out horizontally rather than vertically.

looks like the box needs a good helping of spaghetti sauce? (some meatballs and cheese preferred  )

was also plagued with the same problem before....now
"dupont jumper wires" in one box (internally segregated as male-male, male-female, female-female)
"breadboard jumper wires" in another box (all sizes in one box, may separate later into 4 different sizes)
"DIY short wire jumpers" in another box (these jumper wires are made from thin resin-coated paper clips, or garden ties)
"component lead cut-outs" in another box (for use as breadboard jumpers)

the late James Williams place..... I'll feel right at home there.... :D

Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

I feel so much better now.....not alone in the workbench overflowage syndrome......

My workbench isn't too far removed from the on pictured for Jim Williams - stuff everywhere. I occasionally clear a spot to make room for a new project, but as one might guess, that spot gets filled up and the cycle starts all over again.

I think I'll take some time out tonight to clear off my bench. I feel inspired. :-) If I get, say, a 30-40% clearance, that will be a success.

I do have an organizational method when it comes to where I put stuff, but that method is known only to me (unfortunately). The Dewey Decimal system does not apply....LOL

A true tinkerer will always find room for the coffee.

I have this problem too, but I partially manage it by using plastic "pigeon hole" organiser's, also called bin racks. Basically a shelf with a bunch of small plastic containers neatly stacked in a grid.
Hardware stores sell them for nails, screws, etc. Useful for electronics too.

Yea, I miss the days when a PC came with a built-in coffee cup holder.

Around the holidays where I used to work, people were sending a little executable around (back when it wasn't such a problem) that would open the CD tray. We all had tower PCs then, so this worked. The accompanying note would say something like "Look! I got you a coffee cup holder for Christmas".

But more on topic, I have many of those bins (I repurposed a two-post network rack for this), built another, and have a third one with bigger bins for even more stuff. Have to admit it is super handy to be able to create a project entirely from parts on hand.......

one of the other joke programs around that time, would claim to be deleting all of your files, and list them all off (it was doing a real recursive scan of the disk)
but then at the end, it would just say gotcha, and it never actually deleted anything, lol

Image
and back on topic as well
this desk has 6 raspberry pi's on it
7 SD cards
4 mice
2 pico's
a bunch of random jumper wires
easy access to TWO ethernet cables, for running the rpi's off of
and a composite switch box within reach, to be able to get video out of an rpi over both the RCA jack and the TRRS jack
and a spare lcd panel for hdmi as well

Two of them required earlier in the week to get a corned dog tin opened!

My desk isn't very messy but I've got:
2 Raspberry Pis
1 Gamepad
1 x86 Desktop
A HUGE monitor
Lots of Games
Mine isn't very scattered with loose wires as I usually keep Pis in a case. (and try to squeeze in as many wires and HATs as possible  )
An RPi can be a gaming PC. As long as you have the right packages and software anyway.
Using a RPi4 8GB with Ubuntu Desktop 21.04, main interests are gaming and programming. Also occasionally uses two RPi3B+ and a RPi3B.

i'm abusing them as a hook to hang my headset on when its charging, lol

they are slightly different from normal, with 2 large flat plates on the end
i think they where intended for welding, to hold 2 items flat together, with a wide contact area

but that also helps to reduce the slipage on wood, and avoid scaring it from putting too much force in one point

My upstairs "code bench" has a scattering of Pi's and related stuff also (hardware design is done in the basement). :-)
Let's see - as I look around....stuff just waiting for a project or spares in case I get neanderthal-ish with the voltmeter probes.......
3 ea 3B+ & cases
3 picos
2 zero W's & cases
an Arduino
an MSP430
couple of SSD's
~6 SD cards (readily visible - more are probably buried)
A space for my coffee cup......
.....and of course more wires than I will realistically use in a lifetime......
I like to make my own "Dupont" cables, so I have control over the quality of the connectors and the gauge & length of the wires. Storing them may call for a plastic container with lid as the OP had done....

I remember one that opened a dialog box which said, click Okay to format your drive, and the Cancel button would move away from your mouse so you could never click it (could only click Okay).

Thanks to everyone who posted pics. I feel better about my mess now (not as bad as most of the pics here). ;)

We still have one PC with an optical drive, but it's a slot-load... :(

It really wasn't a good idea back in the day. The drive trays weren't built to handle the weight a cup, let alone a cup full of liquid,.
