A better CMS for a traveling Raspberry Pi

Sat Sep 18, 2021 11:41 pm

Is there a CMS that you don't have to worry about that you can put on the Raspberry pi and not have to worry about the IP address every time you take it to a different wifi hotspot. I use wordpress but I constantly have to have a different subdirectory for each given wifi hotspot and I must build a different wordpress directory and a different mysql database for each different IP. I haven't figured out how to host my Raspberry Pi to the internet only local IP. I have used ethernet cable between my Pi and my computer and that does work. I don't know if there is a CMS that won't worry or can automatically adjust for that.

Can you explain what you are trying to achieve:

Do you have WordPress on the Pi and access it from a browser on your other computer?

Should other people connected to the hotspot be able to access the Pi too?

Why does the Pi have to go with you to the hotspot? Can't it stay at home and be accessed over the internet like any web server?

It works using an Ethernet cable, so why bother with wi-fi?
Do you need the Pi to be hidden?

Looks like the old Wordpress issue that it hard codes the pi address in various places (can be changed).
One way round that is to buy a domain name and use that for Wordpress. It will then work at any hotspot.

I like your theory but suspect the OP was going for Content Management System... :-)

The funny thing is TLAs are so contextual. To me CMS is Configuration Management System, but I don't play in the web server world much.

And use cloudflare free to host the dns so you can change it almost instanty when you change to a new IP. As it caches it should also lower the load. But you can get a VPS for less than a fiver per month to host any webserver you want. Then you don't have to worry where you are.

As others have asked what exactly are you trying to achieve?

Wordpress is very widely used.
£5 per month is quite expensive.
