Pi 400 - Video output over USB C dongle

Tue Sep 28, 2021 9:35 am

Hello,
I just bought a Pi 400 and thought I have a hdmi to micro hdmi cable at home. I didn't, it was mini hdmi...

I have a USB C dongle though, where I can also pass power through (phone charging works).
Could I use that for video output instead? Or is that USB C port on the Pi only wired for power and nothing else?

Thank you very much : )

It's power only, you need the correct HDMI cable. I thought there was one in the Pi400 box?

Thanks for the quick answer.

I only bought the Pi 400 and power adapter, not the whole kit, as I have most of the things already.
Thought I had most of them haha

Then I will have to buy an adapter.

Have a good day.

Either an adapter or a proper micro cable - I prefer the latter - the adapters takes up a lot of room and wobble a bit!

An adapter would be better because it costs less, and I don't plan on moving it around a lot, so being in the same position should be ok.

I read in the documentation that I could also use the Pi "headless". Is that a lot of work? I don't think I necessarily need a GUI and command line could be enough for me.

Adaptors are too wide if you want to use two screens.
The Pi brand micro HDMI cables are good value.

I don't plan on using two monitors, I have my work station with 3 monitors.
Why are adaptors too wide?

Those two seem pretty small.

Also the Pi branded cable might be a good value, but the shipping costs more than the cable.

4.,90€ for the 1m cable and it's 4,95€ shipping....

It's the size of the full size HDMI that is the problem, two adapters cannot quite sit next to each other. But, you don't need that anyway, as you can set it all up headless and easily SSH in or however you want to do it.
