why some posts are locked with unknown reason?

Tue Oct 12, 2021 5:59 am

I am typing some keywords which I interested in search bar, and found some people who had same interested like me in their project, so I'd like to help them. However their post mostly locked for unknown reasons, perhaps because they had no answer within some weeks. Just wondering why?

Mostly locked because someone got silly or everything has been said and nothing more to add.

The policy is to click on the report thread icon and for your report indicate that you have new information to add. If it sounds reasonable, a moderator may unlock the thread and add a message that indicates it is now unlocked so the lock bot doesn't automatically lock it again as inactive.

Wow, many locked.
Perhaps it happened when the forum post server got moved to raspberrypi.com?

No idea. We may have turned on some autolocking somewhere. I did ask about it. Anyway, either start a new thread, or report the last post in a thread and ask for it to be unlocked. You must be sure you post will add more and accurate information to the thread, no point in reopening for dodgy info!

Posts where the latest contribution is over 6 months old have been auto-locked for some time, because they are not likely to benefit from new posts. Are any of the locked posts you found newer than that?

It's quite possible, I lock threads that descend in to chaos, or look like they are going to. Mod spidey sense is quite accurate on these...

"We may have turned on some autolocking somewhere"

"We" certainly did. 7 months ago.

I thought I vaguely remembered something along those lines! He's not at his desk, so couldn't ask!

The annoying things are all the locked and stickied threads, which are just accumulating at the top of the pages. Really, there needs to be some policy to deal with locked and outdated topics, as ATM they're just left to rot in prime real-estate...
As it is apparently board policy to disallow any criticism of anything, as it appears to criticise something is to criticise all the users of that something, I will no longer be commenting in threads which are not directly relevant to my uses of the Pi.

Using report button to request mod to unlock is the solution. Quite a few have done this so not really a problem.

It does make things easier on mods who spend a lot of time dealing with outdated info. However IMO couple years before shutting them down might be better than a few months. Not a disaster but does put a damper on those who like to contribute what's been referred to as 'magnum opuses' (magnum oPi?). Funny thing is the member who instigated this never actually contributed any such.
