I'm 77 and live in Northern Calif between San Francisco and Sacramento along Interstate 80. Oddly enough, I graduated long time ago from an institution called Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute...RPI..as in Raspberry Pi<LOL>...where I learned machine language for an IBM 640 magnetic drum computer. I began using personal computers in 84 when I bought a Kaypro 4 CPM twin floppy "luggable" and today I have 3 W10/W7 machines using early i-core CPUs, 4 macs using similarly aged hardware, and a handful of tablets, laptops, and such. Am presently using a mac mini 2011 as a print server to a Brother laser where the Ethernet has quit working. I want to replace the mini with a Pi (fewer watts) and add file server functions to it to supplement my WD NAS.

From what I gather the Pi is itself needs to boot from an SD card. I see on eBay a reasonably priced addition that could let it boot from an NVMe blade drive via an adaptation of the USB 3 interface or, as an option, a USB-SATA interface that would boot from an SSD.

Any comments from those who have tried such?

I appreciate the speed difference of a SATA vs SD card and imagine that these additions could make a significant difference in the usability of the RPi-4B. It'll be another month before I equip myself so, so until then I'll just be a lurker noob.

Hi, been running linux 20 years. I am no geek but know the basics. I bought a pi 4, less than a week ago. It is now my second computer and I'm loving it.
Once I settle down and have the desktop the way I like it and make my home made python filemanage ssh capable and etc. I will start looking into what a pi can really do. My biggest issue now is the Gtk3 version. Gtk is a nightmare at the best of times but now they have made redundant so many things and replaced it with insane complex crap. I long for the old Tk days...

Mike here, checking in from behind a Pi4B. Unlike some other forums I've been in where I might be something of a Mr. Knowitall, around here I know a little bit less than nothing.

Hi, I’m Lou

Last time I was this close to computer software was back in the 60’s trying to pass a course in Fortran. Hated it!
I was born in Honolulu, got my ham ticket when I was 12, and earned a EE from Purdue. A career in telecom at MCI as a tech, and facilities engineer during the infancy of email eventually led me to Colorado. Until now I’ve been hands-on, hardware all the way. But at 73, I’ve decided to dabble in the software side. Imua!

Hi! I’m Davide and I am a software developer (on Windows, primarily). I worked also as an IT technician and I built my home network. I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 to install on it Nextcloud and OpenVPN, since the former is running under WSL with ridiculous performances and the latter I was never able to run under Windows Server.

Hope to share my experience here with Raspi and learn something from all of you!

Hi!
My name is Steve, I'm divorced and living near Detroit, MI USA. I've been a (mostly) short-haul trucker for the last 40-odd years and been interested in PCs and related technologies ever since my first 33 MHz (with 5.25" floppy drive!) way back in the early 90s. I bought the Pi model A when it was first introduced and have steadily upgraded to each new iteration. Now I'm using the 4 B+.

Hi, I'm software developer from Toronto, Canada.
My name is Jerry and I enjoy traveling and reading.
I'm working on a project and would like to incorporate automated web scraping capabilities based like this mydataprovider.com/ on certain triggers to compile information on certain topics from the web. I've not been able to find any web scraping applications that incorporate livecode. Does anyone have any suggestions? I mean can i just point to a search engine and insert the text and hit search from a virtual browser? Just curious.

Hi!
My name is Jon. I am an ophtalmologist from Sweden. I also work as a clinical consultant for a company making IT-solution for healthcare. Worked as a sysem developer in the 90s and still tinker a bit with programming to solve different problems. Mostly program python these days.
I use whatever tool and OS I find usefull. Win10, OSX, manjaro, rasbian, android and iOS is that I have installed on my devices at the moment.

Registred mostly to be able to post a question that I havent been able to solve myself.

Hey all!

Matt here from an undisclosed location in the US. My job has absolutely nothing to do with computers. I'm recently married, we recently bought our first house together, and recently I have been learning a lot about home repair. Every Christmas my parents decide I need a hobby that never really pans out (e.g. beer brewing). Well this time they got me a Raspberry Pi so I was/am really excited. This hobby could be virtually anything I want.

I'm just starting a project so I'm sure I will have problems along the way, which is why I am here.

I'm not a Linux expert by any means, but I have used Debian (off and on, here and there) over the past 20 years on a spare PC so I know some basic stuff.

Anyways, this looks like a good community. Happy to be here.

I'm Ben,

I have been coding for as long as I can remember, I also like designing plans for electronic gadgets in my free time.
I currently go to secondary school where I continue to learn about new aspects of code at every oppertunity.

Hi, Ravi from India. I've been into computers from late 80s, primarily programming in MSFT technologies.
I am a long time Pi reader, but first time owner of a 4B - 4GB board.
I currently use my board as a desktop/laptop replacement. Pretty happy with it, it's faster than my 4 year old laptop.
I am fairly conversant with Unix/Linux ecosystem, and will while away my spare time here learning about Pi and anything everything I can do with it.
What I like about Pi 4 is that it allows me run some heavy applications such as Eclipse, IntelliJ, and pretty much anything that can run on Java - though I am not a java developer. It also runs docker containers which is a huge plus [though not all images are available for aarch64, yet].
My gripe (not with Pi) is that not many Microsoft products work on aarch64, and not all apps from repositories run, either.
Thanks. Happy knowing you. Will do my best to learn, and in turn try to assist others who're stuck.

Hi,

I am Tony. Spent equal adult life between the US & the UK, but British by birth & currently reside in the UK. Had a 3B+ for a few years. Usual teething problems, but 'nothing like the 4B. 'Bout to drive me crazy, but I will save that for the forums.

To add, as others appear to have shared more;

Been working in IT since the mid 90's. Mostly Infrastructure, Data Centres, ESXi builds and support. Started building PC's/Servers, then supporting them. Current working life is split between EMEA & NAM, working with both Windows & Linux.

Hello all,

I am Michael from Cambridgeshire. I'm a full time husband, father, dog walker, guinea pig feeder and chief pot washer. For a change of scenery someone pays me to maintain and repair railway rolling stock.

I've been working in the engineering sector since my apprenticeship on aero gas turbines before moving to heavy engineering building machines for the oil and gas industry and then finally moving to the railways in 2015.

My background has always been mechanically biased and, aside from studying electrical theory at tech, I have never had any hands on experience with electronics.

I am now studying for an HNC in rail engineering and when a design project came up for an inspection robot I decided to look for ways to fill in the electronics gap. I had messed around with one of the early Pi's, but never did much with it or fully explored the website fully, more fool me.

Now I have taken the time to really look at the resources available it has blown me away as to how much can be learnt and done with these little wonders. I am now the proud owner of a raspberry pi 4 and am enjoying building my first robotics kit.

Hope to meet some great people through the forums and look forward to sharing knowledge and help for the betterment everyone.

Hi Everyone, I join for the first time the community of raspberry. I'm an Engineer, in love with technology and also busy with many projects.
Recently I discovered how powerful RP is and I've been experimenting the different boards, trying to learn and understand how to put ideas in practice. I hope to learn more and more from your inputs and hopefully in a few months to be able to help others as well
Thank you, Emanuel
