New ISS Pi in space, Pi4, new SenseHAT, HD camera, Corel and extra.

Mon Sep 13, 2021 1:49 pm

They've just announced the new Eddy and Izzy Pi setups for the ISS and ESA children's experiments.

It features a new SenseHAT too with light sensors, according to the specs, along with a load of updates, upgrades and other additions oh and Pi4 8GB of course.
Can't believe it was 6 years ago now.

Oooh I see they'll have the cases ready for the printer, not as cool as an Aluminium alloy one though.

Might just have to make one and mount it to the window. :-)

Excellent!
Also where does it say about printing a case?

and head down to flight case.

I hope we get a 'making of story', like the first one.

Is it actually a new Sense Hat? Or just two more sensors added separately? I watched the video, but I'm still not sure which it is?

It's a v2 HAT. Added sensors plus the annoying bug with Pi4 that illuminates the matrix on a reboot is fixed.

Ok, cool thanks. I have two of the original Sense Hats here. I made good use of those. I can see me buying at least one of the new V2's.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Is there any special setup to deal with the heat from the Pi4 at full whack, or just leaving it to throttle. Like using the case as a heat sink.

Await (I hope) some tech details and views from the team that put it together.
And why there are four pixels missing.

Have you made emulators for it, it's a bit more expensive to put to get now.
SenseHAT v2 if available.
HD Camera and big lens,
A Coral.

Could almost provide a full buy your own kit.

Did you slip in any 2040's?

Unfortunately, NASA are not too keen on "slipping" in stuff. Or, more accurately, Fortunately. It's an environment that requires things to be tested to within an inch of their lives to make sure things don't interfere with the station itself.

I think the entire case is a heatsink, but could be wrong.

Bensimmo, if you look at the disassembly video, https://astro-pi.org/assets/about/the_c ... ab681.webm, at about 0:10 you can see a heat transfer component that sits above the Pi major heat sources and provides a thermal link to the main case.

Absolutely missed that heatpipe/link, it'll be interesting to test that out in PLA ;-)
I see they have a shield 'plate' too to reduce heat transfer up into the SenseHAT, so just the LED's to take into consideration maybe.

They aren't missing, that's just empty space. ;)

Actually in some of the videos you can see those leds lit up.

Are there to be any confirmations/timelines provided for all the new goodies?
e.g. Will SenseHat v2 be a commercially available product at some point, or is it just a one-off small run production for high altitude use only? Is there an expected target date for the case STL files? Next week? Next year? When they're ready, stop bothering us?

I have only recently converted the flight case v1 STL files back into solid geometry modelling in Fusion 360 to carve out on a CNC machine. I was thinking a nice piece of polished rosewood. (Not so good for heat dissipation but should be OK for an older pi.) Now I will wait, and produce a v2 case instead. I designed and built my own machine, which is capable of handling aluminium if I wanted to use that for a realistic case. What is frustrating is that although I could add on a 4th and 5th axis quite simply, the software that can create toolpaths using those is considered 'professional' level, so has corresponding price tags associated with it.

The V2 Sense Hat will have to be released to the public. How else can kids code for the Astro Pi Challenge?

An emulator, like there is for V1? I agree that allowing people to get their hands on them seems likely to happen, but that does not mean the availability is soon. Mind you, Raspberry Pi is not in the habit of revealing kit long before the planned availability.

Will the v2 HAT be available to buy anywhere anytime soon, or is this just a two-off for the ISS?

The trinket emulator is already there for the Mission Zero, simple run your code, challenge,
https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/pro ... ion-zero/1
https://trinket.io/mission-zero

the second challenge, Mission Space lab, the winning participants get a similar kit (4GB, any only the camera and Coral if they need it) etc
anyway has all the detail, the OS, the python modules/tools they'll have
https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/pro ... periment/1 show the SHv2 as well.

Flight case will be here, but not there yet https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/pro ... t-case-mk2

(note to mods if you can pass on, Official Guidelines https://astro-pi.org/mission-space-lab/guidelines/ links to a pdf not there, because the link has the wrong year and needs updating to 2021_22)

The light sensor links to this https://gist.github.com/boukeas/e46ab35 ... 9b4265b85f and the TCS23725 links to a page showing it as a discontinued product :? (TCS2372 is on the pimoroni envirophat also, i think)

The v2 HAT will make its way into retail channels at some point. When? Dunno - chip shortages are having lots of random knock-on effects.
