EarlyBird - a solar powered bird watching project

Tue Apr 23, 2013 8:56 am

Hey

I just wanted to show you my solar powered bird-watching-project:

I'm using a RaspberryPi with two usb-webcams and two temperature sensors (DS18B20, via gpio) attached. The whole system is solar powered with a 80W solarmodule and a 85Ah battery. The system takes snapshot and video footage and upload it to my wordpress site and youtube. Every 5 minutes, the current temperature and other useful data is being collected and uploaded to cosm.com

Used software: Video/Image-Capture (motion), DynDNS-Updates (ddclient), VideoEncoder (ffmpeg, v4l-conf), Youtube-Upload (googlecl), Twitter-Update-Script, ntp, ProwlNotifier-Script, ncftp, cosm.com, wordpress and a lot of selfmade bash-script to automate the processes :)

They just started to make a nest this morning!
If there are any questions, feel free to ask.

Hi,
great project! Which webcams are you using? Are both connected to the same Pi?

I started reading your site yesterday - you have some great videos on there!

That's a decent solar power & battery system too.
