Broken raspbian mirror - mirror.aarnet.edu.au

Fri Sep 24, 2021 3:42 am

I hope this catches the attention of whoever runs raspbian.raspberrypi.org.

While updating my pi2 to bullseye, I discovered that AARNet's raspbian mirror is nearly two months out of date. As issues with aarnet's mirror happen fairly frequently (a couple of times a year in my experience), I strongly recommend removing aarnet as a raspbian mirror backend.

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:/home/pi # curl -I http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/pool/main/p/perl/perl_5.32.1-4%2bdeb11u1_armhf.deb

Okay, so raspbian.raspberrypi.org is redirecting me to mirror.aarnet. But the mirror there is bad:

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:/home/pi # curl -s http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/raspbian/raspbian/dists/bullseye/Release|grep Date
Date: Mon, 09 Aug 2021 23:05:35 UTC
root@raspberrypi:/home/pi # curl -s http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/dists/bullseye/Release|grep Date
Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2021 23:09:22 UTC

For now I'm going to work around this by hardcoding a different mirror in my sources.list, but I think it's for the best that raspbian.raspberrypi.org not ever send clients to mirror.aarnet.

I can confirm that this is an issue.

Up until a few months ago, I had some Pi's setup with only the AARNet mirror and didn't really notice that I wasn't getting any updates until there was a specific version of something I needed to install and I noticed some discrepancies. I set apt back to raspbian.raspberrypi.org and subsequently found a pile of updates that I'd missed out on.

Since changing back, everything seemed to be fine for a few months, but just a few days ago I started getting 404 errors on packages when trying to do updates. This is because raspbian.raspberrypi.org directs you to other mirrors and it seems to be preferring AARNet for me at the moment.

I've emailed AARNet to see if they can fix it, and in the meantime switched to an alternate mirror.

I raised a ticket with AARnet yesterday concerning the RaspberryPi OS updates being not in sync on mirror.aarnet.edu.au

Their mirror is now fixed and up-to-date.
