How to get the wifi working on Pi3, on Raspian "wheezy"

Fri Mar 04, 2016 11:56 pm

Here is a little recipe I cooked up:

Suppose you've got a PI2 (or Pi1) and want to transfer its SD card with all the goodness, to a Pi3. Great hey?

* On the old pi, run raspi-update, apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade etc
* Transfer SD card to the new Pi

And all is great.

Except the wifi, which won't work.

If you don't want to upgrade to the new OS "Jessie", there are missing files.

At the time of writing, the Pi foundation haven't made the firmware package available for "Wheezy" - the old version.

It took me some time to work this out.

To fix this, get the firmware file, for example:

wget 'http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/p ... i4_all.deb'

Then install with dpkg -i firmware-brcm80211_0.43+rpi4_all.deb

---

Note that these instructions will probably be obsolete very soon, and will probably be inadvisable soon after that.

Essentially you need the files:

/lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.bin
/lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt

Which are included in the package above.

Happy pi3.
