rpi-update : crash before end

Sat Oct 22, 2016 10:45 pm

Hey!

May be it's due to an old SD card fsck fix...? But system is running fine !

When trying to rpi-update, it's when trying to write the new firmware, got this line :

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/rpi-update : ligne 74 : 1976 instruction non permise depmod -b "${ROOT_PATH}" -a "${BASEDIR}"
(the number 1976 is not always the same number on each test...)

No way to update the firmware, rpi-update has crashed...

If someone konws how to fix it... I really don't know where to give those informations about ROOT_PATH + BASEDIR... :s
Many thx for your help :)

In Raspbian Wheezy, which is end of life, the only way to update the kernel / firmware is:

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-update

In Raspbian Jessie rpi-update is not required, unless advised to fix a specific issue, the kernel /firmware is updated by:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
or

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Take what I advise as advice not the utopian holy grail, and it is gratis !!

Thx for your answer!

But I think I'm not sure about that... I see on a new Raspbian install on another RPi, kernel 4.4.21 is given with the latest jessie-lite.img
everything is update/dist-upgrade, then with rpî-update the firmware was updated to 4.4.26
So for me, rpi-update is needed today ;)

On this other install, after the rpi-update :
uname -a
Linux rasp2retro 4.4.26-v7+ #915 SMP Thu Oct 20 17:08:44 BST 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux

That's because the 4.4.26 kernel and the firmware changes that go with it have not been fully tested. Some time in the future the RPF folks will roll-up the new kernel/firmware into the apt-get package.

For most users, with general purpose needs they should NEVER run sudo rpi-update. There's too much risk of destroying their machines. Leave it for the experts and specialists to run with the stuff from the leading edge (including things like the USB / PXE booting).

That's why I was motivated to upgrade to a newer fixed kernel, with rpi-update :p
(Dirty Cow!)

viewtopic.php?f=66&t=163434

RPi v1 : Linux 4.4.26+ #915 Thu Oct 20 17:02:14 BST 2016 armv6l GNU/Linux
RPi v2 : Linux 4.4.26-v7+ #915 SMP Thu Oct 20 17:08:44 BST 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux

rpi-update is still bugged on the RPi v2, the package raspberrypi-kernel was installed during the last dist-upgrade.
Is it ok ? no more Dirty Cow on this RPi ??

Thx ;)

If you run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade you'll get the 4.4.26+ kernel (which includes the Dirty COW fix).
