Raspbian available in 64-bit version?

Sun Jul 16, 2017 12:34 am

Hi,

I noticed in the Jesse release that it is only the 32-bit version. Why is it only build for 32-bit? Are there plans to release a 64-bit version of Raspbian?

It is built as 32 bit because it has to be able to run on the Raspberry Pi 0, 1 and (early) 2 models which are 32 bit. The CPU in the Pi 3 (and later Pi 2) support native 32 bit mode. Some tests running 64 bit mode show that there may be a small increase in performance.

A 64 bit version for the higher models will probably appear at some point, but that will double the workload for the maintainers.

There are some 64 bit OSen that run on a Pi, like Debian, but you won't get all the support and extras that are in Raspbian.

Is there any particular reason why you want 64-bit Raspbian? Or were you just curious about its absence?

I use Raspbian because (from what I have seen) it is far better suited to the Pi, better supported, has a recent kernel, etc than the various 64-bit versions of Linux available. It really is a good OS. For 64-bit ARM (learning AArch64 for example), I use other SBC's where the "official OS" is 64-bit on the same processor.

People expect 64-bits perhaps because its advertised as a 64-bit CPU https://www.raspberrypi.org/learning/ha ... pberry-pi/, but really there is only 1GB of ram so its not needed for memory addressing. Otherwise its just about performance. Obviously anything involving 64-bit arithmetic would run much faster (such as sysbench!) and the generally more modern, streamlined, ISA with double the number of registers (32) helps most software a bit. The latest IEEE compliant version of NEON SIMD it includes, is available in 32-bit mode as well.

Thanks for all the replies! I was merely curious. While waiting for a reply, I searched deeper and understand that need to be compatible with older hw.
