Really Fast Browser Inside!

Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:57 pm

This is an old thread, new info and version available in this thread:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 66&t=35281

Chromium is a good browsing solution and the webkit engine is quite fast at rendering when it is already running. But I can not stand the very long start up time of the everything but the kitchen sink approach.

So for my quick browsing needs on the pi:

web

A mini web browser build on libwebkitgtk.
Featuring: uri text entry, new window on shift click, ... and ... nothing else!

(I forgot about the startup time of less than a second on my pi)

hi, I'm interested in trying out your browser, as I'd like to use the pi as a simple browsing pc.
Can it be made even faster using the trick described here, in the answer from goldilocks?
And, what does that file do exactly? Does it load just the browser in X, and not the desktop environment?

You can start just the browser without desktop from the console:

xinit /usr/bin/web

But I think a much better option is to use pure openbox

xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session

I switched to the silent Pi for all day to day tasks. I use the minimal browser (only fire up chromium for google drive backups). The big box (energy waste x100 & noise) is only used once a week for printing  , because I was to lazy to connect the printer via ethernet yet.

Most important fix for me to make the pi usable and more responsive for desktop use was the addition of this kernel option to /boot/cmdline.txt (check CPU usage while moving and clicking your mouse. If you reach 100% try this!)

usbhid.mousepoll=10

And if you want to surf even faster turn off javascript in the source code ;-)

Might use this as standard setting in the next version and a button to turn it on, but that would not be minimalist anymore?

Thank you, I'll try them out!
