How to setup Minecraft 1.8.9 on RaspPi2

Just tried installing fresh March update of Raspbian and went through all the Minecraft install steps, including Optifine OptiFine 1.11.2 HD U B7 and it still works just fine without a hitch. Just so everyone knows.


I may take all the work on the front page, and rewrite up the steps to getting it all working on another thread soon, and maintain that thread as new versions are released. We'll see if I want to put that much work into it...

That would pretty much be the best thing ever, especially because I just got a new pi3b and have followed all the steps here, multiple times, and have not been able to get Minecraft to run, ever.

A detailed step-by-step for 1.11.2 with optifine would be grand. And as you said, it could be adjusted for each new working version while maintaining the explicit detail for each step. I don't know what's going wrong with my install or setup but I can't make any sense of out it. I'm doing everything on the step-by-steps on page 1 and page 8.

On RaspPi 3b, the OpenGL drivers say something like Full, Fake, and Disabled.

When either of the top two are enabled, many other things don't work. Like YouTube videos in Chromium, (the page just crashes) and Minecraft PI (crashes immediately at startup). Is this common? I imagine it's because the experimental OpenGL drivers don't play well with either of those. But it's kinda a big bummer than you can't have the Minecraft PC and YouTube or MCPI on the same system.

Yea, it's a bit frustrating but, these are the short comings with a $35 computer. I'm currently attempting to have a NOOBS setup with one version of Raspbian for ... normal things, and one version (just a direct copy renamed) for Minecraft PC (if I can ever get it to work). I'll also be running Kano OS and RetroPie, so a quad boot I guess. I know RetroPie can be installed on top of the normal Raspbian, but I'm going to test to see if I notice any benefits.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand... Good to know that the OpenGL driver issues are not just for me. Going to try to install MCPC again... but I'm not hopeful.

So I've gotten OptiFine 1.11.2 HD B7 installed but can't run it because there's some kind of Reflection class that OF uses that can't be found. Any help is appreciated.

You got me on this one...
It may be that you missed placing a .jar file in the CP line, or that it's referencing a .jar file that doesn't exist for some reason. Something that has to do with fastutil, which is supposed to be referenced in the CP line in the run script. Doublecheck it and make sure the reference is there.

So I've gotten OptiFine 1.11.2 HD B7 installed but can't run it because there's some kind of Reflection class that OF uses that can't be found. Any help is appreciated.

I have had my PI join games on the network back on 1.11.1, but have not tried any public servers with any version yet.

What server are you joining to? I will attempt to join to it on my PI when I get a chance in the next couple days if you're OK with posting the IP. You can PM me the server IP if you're not comfortable broadcasting it on this forum.

I tried joining your server from my workplace but I believe they have an implicit deny set up, so the port being used is being blocked... I didn't have time to try it at home last night but will see if I remember to try it tonight.

I'll chime in here and say that Berryboot will not work after following the steps to enable the GL driver. (After experiencing it myself)

It will basically refuse to boot, and you will have to remove the driver from config.txt to get it working.

Here's the line you will need to remove if you enabled it (in the root of the SD card, config.txt)

Using 'File Manager' navigate to folder /home/pi/Minecraft (assuming your logged in as 'pi'). Right click on file 'run.sh', select 'Text Editor'.

Scroll down to MINECRAFT_LOGIN=<email address> and edit the email address to that used when you registered on the Minecraft website (minecraft.net). Scroll down to MINECRAFT_USERNAME=<username> and edit this to your Minecraft username. Scroll down to MINECRAFT_PASSWORD=<password> and edit this to your Minecraft password.

Select 'File','Quit'. Then select 'Yes' to save changes.

Well, I've been watching this topic for a long time, and I want to say thanks first.

As the subject said, I've found a way to run minecraft 1.10.2 on RPi3. I don't know whether someone else has successfully run minecraft 1.10.2,and it seems not. So I'm posting my solution.

First, I am not using an official launcher. I use a launcher which is called "Hello Minecraft Launcher"(which is now sold to a company). I think this launcher is good and keep using it. Download it from github (I'll give the link at last) and never update it (the newsest version contains ads and performs badly).

Second, put the launcher in a folder and launch it in the shell. The program will make ".minecraft" folder in the folder where you put the launcher in. It's easy to know how to use it, and you can ask me if you really don't know. You must download the games first and then the assets and libraries in the program (these are official). DON'T RUN THE GAME NOW!

Third, the most important part, download the jars and the libraries provided in this topic. If you are success in step2, you will find a folder called "libraries" in ".minecraft",get in here

Replace the jar and sha in "lwjgl/2.9.4-nightly-20150209". Open the jar in "lwjgl-platform/2.9.4-nightly-20150209" and replace the libraries in it.

Now you can play any version of minecraft on RPis (just download another version if you want).

I'm not so active in the forum so please wait my reply or just google it if you have problems. This post may help you run minecraft 1.10.2. I only tested it on RPi3 and you can try this on your RPi2.

PS: Make sure you have the latest java.

Edit:if you can't find the jars mentioned above, try to run the game once and the launcher will download the missing files , then continue step3. Try a few times and you'll success.

There is so much info in this thread spread out all over and so many versions of files and everything, it's very confusing to try to work it out, and when others say they figured it out, they don't post their steps so no one else can learn from their success. Anyone willing to help with this? Thanks.

I've decided to try this with my Berrybooted Pi 3.

I'm stuck on getting the launcher running currently.

The launcher does run (and the window does pop up) however it will check the LZMA, unpack the launcher from LZMA, clean up, and then get stuck on this:

Sigh... this is so frustrating. I don't know how everyone is have such ease and luck. No matter what I do, I cannot get Minecraft to work. I've been doing the instructions from here:

along with the video in it. And most times it crashes with the screen going black and some error that says

And I have to power cycle the Pi to make it responsive again. Other times, it'll load Minecraft, I can even get into a single player game, and at some point if i start playing, or if i want to make it fullscreen, then the screen will go black and freeze. I have no idea what to do, and it seems like no one else has those errors. I've tried raspbian on NOOBS, I've tried an entire 32GB sdcard with Raspbian flashed straight on it (everything updated of course once loaded). I don't understand why i've had such poor luck. Do I have a lemon Pi board?

Sounds like you have got Minecraft working. However do not try running it full screen as the Pi cannot cope and will likely crash. You have to play Minecraft in windowed mode with at least render chunks turned down to 2.

Yea, thanks. I was frustrated at my last post. But I was finally able to 1. install OptiFine and that makes a big difference. 2. figured out that it can't run at high res so changing the screen resolution to something much lower improved speed and stability. Now I just need to replicate the process on another Pi.

Question for you or anyone else: if I use runOptiFine.sh and make a copy of it, can I put another username and login info and UUID and play as that user? Since we don't launch through the proper launcher, would that be a way to change the user? Or is the user baked into it once you load the real launcher, sign in, launch the game before it crashes?
