files copied to USB stick not appearing

Wed Oct 13, 2021 4:45 pm

I wanted to backup some files on my Rasp Pi to a USB stick. Using file manager to select the files, a mixture of python and text files.

I pasted them into a new empty directory on the USB stick but got a popup box stating that some of the files were already in the directory.

When I checked I found that a number of text files were not in the USB directory but when I copied them again got the same message saying they already exisited.

I have checked for hidden files it makes no difference. The text files do not appear to be in the USB directory using file manager but insists they already exist if I try to copy them into the directory again.

the file names I am trying to copy are like this

lightshow.py
Lightshow_2018-12-07 09:59:21.txt
Lightshow_2018-12-07 10:41:22.txt

I have unmounted and remounted the USB stick the txt files still do not appear.

After copy press F5 to refresh.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Done some testing the problem is the colons in the file name.

You can save a file with colons in the file name when you create it. e.g. Text Editor

Using the file manager you can copy and paste to other directories on the Pi.

BUT

You cannot use file manager to copy and paste the file with colons in the filename to a USB stick.

I am using Pi 2 Model B running Wheezy

Does this problem exist on the more recent versions of Raspian

Possibly but it's most likely a file system restrcition. Was that USB stick formatted with FAT (any version) or NTFS by any chance?

Thanks for the reply

Think you are right - both USB sticks tried were FAT32

If this is the problem, the message you receive when trying to copy them could do with being changed from 'file already exists' to something like 'incorrect file name format'. or 'filename not supported'

That's probably something for the linux kernel devs. But you can blame Microsoft. On Windows ":" is the seperator between drive letter and diriectory path, so wasn't valid in a file name. Though, frankly, I've no idea if it is now permitted as I've grown so used to not using it.
