MotionEyeOS General Use

Sun Mar 17, 2019 1:38 am

Hi all,

I'm interested in setting up a surveillance system using my pi 2 model b and have come across motion eye os. I'm wondering if this OS still does the usual stuff that raspbian does as I'd like to use it to control my relays and things as well as the cameras, not instead of..

Possibly not. MotionEyeOS is a cut down version so there's lots of bits missing. You'd be better off installing MotionEye (without the OS) on top of Raspbian.

Alternatively, look at RPi Cam Web interface. Personally, I prefer it, having tried both. You get the ability to record images and videos via the interface and the motion detection seems much more stable. It's not as pretty as MotionEye and it's limited to the RPi camera rather than supporting other USB cameras, etc, but I still prefer it.

You could try Pikrellcam, it can be built on Raspbian Lite.
I use both, MotionEyeOS for USB Sony PS3 Eyecams and Pikrellcams for the Picameras.

And if you feel like jumping off the deep end.
Roll your own with PiCore Linux and Python Picamera or even baremetal on Ultibo.
I did get upto 7 cameras, those old model B's got a good run, years at 24/7.
Now at 4 while I sort out night vision.
I'm dancing on Rainbows.
